Adventure Race 22:39:00 [3] 107.0 mi (12:42 / mi)

LBL 24h w Erl Andrei and Jeff...Alpine Shop

32 CPs for 8 legs, plus 8 CPs (alpha) that could be obtained any time, any mode. i thought this was a really good format that allowed for good strategy but not overwhelming. RDs warned about the long point-to-point bike ride to finish. race start at 10AM so Sat morning was really luxurious, sleeping in. more RDs should consider this!!

BIKE 1 (13 miles)
Kenlake Resort to Sugar Bay
normally starting on the bike is a chaotic mess, but this time everyone seemed to be OK w us going to the front and just leading out the pack, even once we got on to the Central Hardwoods Scenic Trail singletrack. some confusion crossing under 68, then a pack again on the North/South Trail singletrack. then everyone dispersed going their separate ways to the alpha CPs. we mis-attacked our first one but corrected and rolled in to TA 1 in the lead (but hard to tell w different strategies on alpha CPs). No Sleep was with us too.

PADDLE 1 (9.5 miles)
Sugar Bay to Hwy 68 Bridge
then a SUPER windy paddle "upstream" in the dammed Kentucky Lake. wind was at *that* angle where it just wings the boat around...super tough for Erl. it was just one of those physical paddles where we fought for every inch. it was really nice to duck in to the bays for CPs along the way.

TREK 1 (11.5 miles)
Hwy 68 Bridge to Sugar Bay
then we trekked back to our bikes, almost made it back in the daylight (put on our lights at the last CP). really nice woods, comfortable pace, good nav from Andrei.

BIKE 2 (15 miles)
Sugar Bay to Hillman CG
rode bikes up to the north end of LBL in the dark. started to get a bit chilly.

BIKE 3 (15 miles)
Canal Loop
at Hillman CG we had 3 loops to complete (2 treks, 1 bike) and we had to return to TA in between each loop. we opted for the bike loop first to shorten TA times and get it over with. Kuat was in TA with us but they trekked first. the bike loop went well, some trouble w 27

TREK 2 (4 miles)
Hillman Trail-O
mostly trails, people everywhere and it was fun to see lights in the woods. despite mostly being on trails, it was hard for me to keep up w the boys, kinda sore feet and just no pep in the step. what is up!!!

TREK 3 (4 miles)
another Hillman loop, more off-trail. we skipped the 2 farthest out CPs bc we were worried about the long ride home. set a time limit and weren't confident in getting them all. my trekking legs continued to be dismal.

BIKE 4 (35 miles)
Hillman CG to Kenlake Resort
then a long ride home, lots of ST but my biking legs felt pretty good, especially on the punchy ups of this trail. just feeling like i could point the bike at anything, give it a little pedal, and BAM we would be thru. a great feeling :)

we got home in plenty of time (1h21min left on the clock) but still weren't confident that we could have got the trekking CPs we skipped. Kuat cleared but was 14min late so they missed the W. otherwise I was really cheering for them since Jason was in a serious bike/car accident only 10 months ago and has returned to the AR world in great shape, plus both him and Ashley are just so dang nice, they really had a great performance.
