Mr. Fuhrmann's Death by Gravel.
new 1x drivetrain on the Battle Finch. 42T ring in front which is probably too big but made it work.
forecast was for snow first 60min but then warming into the 50s. so a lot of people were under-dressed but thx to Erl who threw in a couple extra layers at the last minute we were dressed, but certainly not over-.
rode out and almost immediately was struggling w pace, same as DBMFH. body and mind felt fine, but it just was not translating to acceptable effort vs. speed for a 90mi ride. Erl took some stuff out of my pack, and kept trying to figure things out. battled with this for a few miles, and then decided to try and over-compensate to get the legs opened up. that kind of backfired too and i had a little meltdown. tears in the first 10mi of an all-day ride, not ideal, but we kept pedaling.
and it kept snowing! big fat, wet flakes that soaked our layers and it was cold. and it just did not let up like it was forecast and i was worried about being too cold to finish. made it to the 40mi gas station just on the edge of numbness. stayed there for 30min thawing out and eating fresh french fries. Erl found a roll of Tess's poop bags in his pack so we put those on our feet and then got some latex gloves from the gas station for our hands. brilliant! rolled out and the clouds were breaking up and sun starting to poke thru. pretty windy though.
next 25ish miles to Bass i started to feel better. still figuring out the 1x (ironic, it should be simpler than 2x, right?) and the improving conditions helped. last year i rolled into Bass an exhausted heap and took a short-cut home while SuperKate rode the whole thing. so this year i was determined to give the entire route my best shot in honor of SK who was dealing w a tire problem today. we got snacks at Bass, chatted with Stephan, and then hooked up w Yvonne to crush the full route. super motivating!
the final 28 miles were great. loved riding w Yvonne and telling her every single detail about Belize, whether she wanted to hear it or not!! sun continued to try and shine, and our layers were dried out. super happy to finish and motivated to get this slow starting issue figured out for the rest of the year.
9:18 elapsed time. ~30min stop at mile 40 gas station. so another ~45min stopping other places! too much.
