Adventure Race 21:03:00 [3]

T-Rolls w Erl and David, as a 3 purely for USARA purposes. added Garrison as a solo and the 4 of us stuck together. we had 2 sets of maps and 2 stellar navigators so super nice set up. beautiful course set by Gerry and near perfect weather w fall-like temps.

midnight start.
BIKE (1mi, pointless except for photo op and added racer stress)

TREK w coasteer and ascend and rap. we missed pre-race ascend practice and it showed. David and I super slow getting up. Erl and G much faster. they had 3 lines and we got on one right away. some waiting on the rappel, they only had 2 lines. left the camp in 3rd.

BIKE w some trails! but gravel/paved roads otherwise. our skinny tires did good. caught 2nd place Toporadicals but didn't pass them.

PADDLE as we rolled into TA, 1st place Rib Mountain was just paddling out. good sign. geared up and started chasing, paddle points were any order so we went clockwise, opposite of Rib. paddled across Mississippi River, lots of chop and weird temperature pockets. and lily-whacking. stunning beautiful sunrise. lots of birds. I got cold and wore a shower cap! got our points, saw Rib in the Elk River, then paddled back across, didn't see them, took out in the lead. what?

BIKE
trying to build the gap as much as possible. cool diversion on a flowery island.

TREK in 2 loops, TA staff told us the gap was 1hr at paddle take out. so we took the first loop steady and clean, but saw Rib going opposite way in a location which told us the gap was shrinking. uh oh. started 2nd loop in lead, this one was much more physical but we had to keep running where possible. we didn't think we had time to clear, we even skipped CP47, but later re-calculated and went back for 47 and cleared w about 45min to spare, still in lead but weren't sure how much. total trek was ~9hrs for us. surprisingly decent veg, some thorns and nettles but nothing nightmare-inducing.

BIKE no-nonsense ride back to HQ. v painful for me since trek chafed :(

TREK w more coasteering. just trying to hold it together. saw Rib in the river a mere 5-10min back w 1 CP remaining. panicked but recovered and held on for the W.

uncomfortable race for me, combo of getting real cold on paddle, then upset tummy which led to reduced food, some low energy levels, then end of race chafing. everyone had their own low spots but thankfully all at different times so we could pull each other thru. super team effort. also another great race by Rib. they kept making time on us, just had 1 paddle mistake in the dark which cost them. true contenders and also all-around nice people. great to see so many AR friends too including the Michigan crew!
