Bike 9:26:59 [3] 94.41 mi (10.0 mph) +7034ft
shoes: Specialized Crave SL

Lumberjack 100. 1st hundo on a SS...32x20 and front suspension fork (swapped out the rigid a few days ago).

Lap 1 2:59
got to line up with MARI CHANDLER!! and then watch as her gears and speedy legs rolled away as i spun my brains out. finally got to the singletrack and joined the longest conga line of mtb-ers i've ever seen. i moved up where i could and found myself on Danielle Musto's wheel (women's open winner last year, on a SS this year but racing Open so we weren't in same cat). just rode w Danielle for the first 20mi or so. then a few folks got in between us and i didn't want to stress myself out that early trying to pass/keep up, so she rolled away too and i rode the rest of the lap mostly solo.

Lap 2 3:10
started out good but had to walk a few of the steeper climbs. got in front of a line of dudes about mile 43ish and stressed out trying to stay fast and in front of them, didn't have a chance to eat so was super bonky coming into the aid station at mile 50. ate a ton there and got back at it. took another 5 miles to recover and then couldn't figure out how to get my sports drink out of my bottle since Peat put chia seeds in it and they were clogging the nozzle. minor freak out since that's 350cal i really needed. but then figured it out and was much happier.

Lap 3 3:16
stoked to be in good shape heading out on Lap 3. weather had stayed cool and i focused on enjoying the beautiful woods and mega-buff trail instead of on my tired legs. about mile 72 (on my fave tech climb of the course) i got passed by a group of 4 guys who were setting perfect tempo so i perked up, focused, and hung w them until the aid station at mile 82. so thankful for their motivation. the rest of the lap was just focused on getting it done. passed a v overweight gentleman, and got passed by a v old dude, and both gave me tons of inspiration. realized i had a chance at under 9:30 so pushed on the final 5mi and made it!

besides the 1st lap, i saw NO OTHER WOMEN out there so i had no clue where i was. didn't really care, my goal was to stay focused on my race and execute better than Cohutta and Mohican. goal totally accomplished! tough to say if gears would have been faster for me, there are so many tradeoffs. my hands avoided numbness for the most part which was my biggest concern. some cramping issues w L hammy but fixed w ecaps. 7 bottles, 3 CR333 and 4 water.

super kudos to Mari for winning women's open! so fun to hang w her and catch up on her new RV life.

Michigan sure is beautiful! we stayed w Team Noah Foundation friends Kim and Chris who took super good care of us. post-race bbq was INSANE! and they live on a beautiful little lake, so peaceful.

also super kudos to the Lumberjack folks for recognizing tiny women's SS class (5 signed up, 3 DNF). but i got a real-deal axe trophy and really generous payout. class act!

kitted up w Peat and our friend Igor from Mohican rolled up and wanted to ride a bit. just checked out opening climb and final mile. super happy w my 32x20 and suspension fork, thinking they will be about perfect. had to cut things short to make it to our homestay in time for dinner. but totally worth it...Kim and Chris fed us so well!

w Erl before he left. pink shorts.

Note

walk 2mi to dinner and 2mi home. in the rain. MHW Plasmic Ion jackets need a better hood design, although it's pretty entertaining the way it fits Erl's face.
