Adventure Race 12:20:00 75.0 mi (9:52 / mi)
Plot Pedal Paddle 18hr w Jeff and David. start at 1840ish so most of the time it was dark. pretty horrible veg and maps which spelled doom for most teams, but David and Jeff led us to victory. took things slow and super conservative and kept moving thru chest-high stinging nettle and sticker bushes. we actually looked forward to the thorn patches. the USGS portion of the maps were okay but lots of trails out there which would have helped a lot of teams have a better experience, but they weren't mapped. bummer.
also it rained from about 2000-0400
TREK 1, 4.5mi, 1840-1925
thru roads of Dixon which was pretty cool, tons of route choices!
PADDLE 1, 10ish mi, 1925-2140
both down and upstream on the Rock River. rogaine-style which was cool. we chose downstream first, nabbed a tricky point (CP5) in the daylight, then an upstream haul to 4, 6, and 7. put-in seconds ahead of BW/GJ/W but they went opposite way.
BIKE 1, 13ish mi, 2140-2240
came off the water kinda chilly but didn't bring a jacket, Jeff made me one out of our gigantic ziplock in TA and it was perfect. also discovered my front wheel out of true from mailbox incident...whoops. seemed to roll ok tho so we hit the road. road ride w straightforward nav, v rainy.
TREK 2, 7mi, 2240-0120
got there in the lead. v careful w non-waterproof maps in the rain under the pop-up TA tent. CP13 was scary, we used unmapped trail but ran too far so David relocated, we carefully attacked, and let out a huge sigh of relief when Jeff pinged the flag. the veg was absolutely horrible and w no trail map we just chose to go straight at everything to avoid getting lost. i was 3rd behind the boys and still suffering from nettles. slow slow slow but David absolutely nailed this section, we walked right up to every flag w minimal trouble. "ropes" at CP17 were not that great and actually rammed me into a down tree that i would have been able to avoid otherwise. oh well. continued to be careful careful careful all the way around this loop, didn't see any lights.
BIKE 2, 2.5mi, 0120-0140
short bike and we kept pants/trekking shoes on.
TREK 3, 4mi, 0140-0300
another new non-waterproof map but only 3 CPs. bushwhack to the first one but veg was slightly nicer. then we found trail maps in the woods on kiosks and used those to our advantage for the other 2. slightly overshot 26 "rootstock" after trekking too far in the swamp but Jeff finally pinged it up on the hillside. ran back on trails. my legs weren't feeling too great, L hammy sore.
BIKE 4, 35mi, 0300-0700
finally took off my Jeff Sona original rain top for the last bike. all road, mostly paved. we had a bit of trouble with the bucket CPs bc there was no flag but got em. once the sun rose it was a slog back to finish line, all of us sleepy and i was not peppy. embarrassing for a 12hr race to be falling asleep but we had a big lead and terrain/nav was kinda boring. so yeah.
as usual, love racing w these guys. the David/Jeff combo attack on frustrating nav is rock solid and i just get to trot along behind them singing songs.
