Adventure Race 5:54:00 [4]
38c
Local shootout race. We won. Cold!
TREK 1, CPs 1-5, 3k redline
Race HQ at Wyman Center. we went south first, along with about 40% of the field, had the biggest nav error on the day...30sec attack too high on reentrant. back to HQ in 1st. annoying TA - winter races are so cumbersome!
BIKE 1, CPs 6-13, 8.5mi road
out first but soon joined by Downhill Bikes Branson/Kuat (4p coed) and Off the Front (4p male). Team Fusion (2p male) somewhere in the mix too. 34 Down (4p coed) not far behind. rode in a loose pack thru Eureka to the put-in at Route 66 SP. simple road riding and nav, not even much route choice.
PADDLE 1, CPs 14-16, 4mi
4th at the put-in. bikes in the boats. canoe paddles mandatory. me in the back w jeff in front. had to slow down to adjust bikes and then move jeff's pack around to stop my shifter from icing up. about 1/2way through my hands froze. whimpered and whined a lot and jeff switched gloves with me. lifesaver. maybe lost some time on 3rd but not much - everyone suffered here. (but tried to be thankful i was not paddling a tomcat.) take-out at Sherman Beach.
BIKE 2, CPs 17-27, 6.5mi trail + 6.5mi road
SURPRISE TREK 2, CPs 40-42, 1.5mi, in the middle of bike 2
bike the flats to blue ribbon, rode it backwards (fun!), then more river flats to the al foster. at one of the CPs on al foster we were greeted by race staff w bonus instructions - trek on unmapped trail and find 3 CPs, once you find the 3rd one just come back to start however you want. we did this in bike shoes and passed DBB/Kuat who were changing into trekking shoes. felt good and pushed hard here to make the gap stick. then back on bikes, onto the roads, up and over Alt, back to HQ.
TREK 3, CPs 28-35, 6k redline
jeff and i plotted 8 CPs on the 1:15k Greensfelder o-map. thought that we were 3rd (behind the 2 all-boy teams) into the woods w DBB/Kuat close behind. we had to crush this trek. david was perfect on nav. we all ran really hard. tons of climb. finished back at HQ...1st overall!!! REALLY HAPPY!!!!!
winter sprint adventure racing is so hard - tough to dress correctly for changing conditions/disciplines and then the race is so short that i felt like i couldn't stop to make small clothing adjustments when things got too hot/cold. hard to keep liquids available too.
