start at 0630. finished around 2145? cutoff was 2230. for a 12hr race. Gary usually gets his time estimates right but this one was way off. no team cleared. we skipped 3 CPs at the end and still got 2nd/3rd overall (2P and Not 2P). fun day in the woods though. great to have Carrie back, and superb effort from our 6th man, Brad.
TREK 1, separator, CPs 1-5, 5k, wore Hokas, did not get stung by bees
BIKE 1, CPs 6-10, 17 miles, mix of doubletrack/gravel/pavement, had to fix a flat.
PADDLE 1, CPs 11-12, 7.5 miles, with bikes in boats. Brad and I got stuck in a tree but he saved the day, and the $$ bikes. super impressive.
TREK 2, CPs 41-42, 3.5k, these were free-choice CPs worth 2 pts, we chose to attack on foot from the west just before paddle take-out at CP12
BIKE 2, CPs 13-14, <5 miles
(the end of BIKE 2 was the most we knew about the course at the start.)
TREK 3, CPs 15-23, plotted on the clock. very physical! took us 4 hrs at hiking pace, but super accurate nav by David. brought us back to the paddle take-out (CP12)
PADDLE 2, CP 24, maybe 4-5 miles?? brought us back to the bike drop (CP14). rained on us the whole time but no bikes in boats! whee!
BIKE 3, CPs 25-29 plus 2-pointers 38, 39, 40. had to plot these in the rain which took forever. we had a sweep route but skipped 27, 28, 29 due to time cutoff.
we hiked all the treks and most of the bike/paddle effort was moderate for me. Jeff and I had mini races for the CPs which was super fun. the boys still did a lot of extra work especially towards the end. a little bit longer day than any of us had planned for which led to sharing headlamps and calories in last 4 hours. but we held it together, and got er done. proud of the team and stoked for Nats x2.
