w David as Alpine Shop (2p coed)
PROLOGUE 2mi run completed by 1 person from each team (me)
TREK 1 4pt O kinda messy, some weird plots and trashy woods slowed everyone down. came back to TA basically tied for lead with WEDALI.
BIKE 1 thru town, onto paved bike path, then some singletrack advertised as "gnarly" but in reality tamer than the dirt crit course. confusing race instructions messed a few teams up here (us included). we gained the lead after the singletrack but then WEDALI caught us on the gravel and we rode into next TA together
PADDLE 1 on a very flooded rock river, basically a loop with significant sections paddled upstream. david is great at this. i navved!!! bobbled on the first CP (attacked too early, i was excited) but got everything else and built a 20-min lead on WEDALI (Bushwhacker in 3rd, Rev3 in 4th at the end of the paddle)
BIKE 2 short, to the o-course. we did this alone.
TREK 2 10pt O, the crux of the race basically. we entered in the lead, which at the time we thought was 10 minutes. and when the 2nd place team is WEDALI, that is nothing :) map was sketch (1:24k blown up to 1:10k, details fuzzy) and woods were v trashy. david kept nav careful and clean until the 7th point which we believe was mis-hung. that is where we met WEDALI also searching for it, and bushwhacker in the area too. tense but funny situation since we are all friends, but gunning for the lead. Biz found it, gave us a hint, and then we chased them out of the woods to the final TA, leaving it 2-3 minutes behind them in 2nd place
BIKE 3 sorta long roads back into town. we knew WEDALI had been super strong on bikes all day so we made opposite route choices on the points that offered them, hoping to find an advantage. never saw them after the first cp on this section.
ROPES rolled back to S/F, race staff told us we were 2nd, so we took time to change shoes and then ran over to rappel. Amy was just clipping in and was last to go for WEDALI so the gap was smaller than we thought. me and david rappelled and then ran back to the finish line i think 10??? minutes later for 2nd place.
bummed a little about the mis-hang, but i seriously had so much fun at this race. 12hr NIGHT is a fantastic course length. and getting to hang with buddies from other states was a big bonus. quality experience for me and david as a team too. with a few changes this race could be a big must-do in Illinois.
