6 AM

Bike 15:53:01 [3] 203.0 mi (12.8 mph) +7900ft
ahr:149 max:185 shoes: Salsa Warbird

evidently the gamin has ate my ride. no data. makes me sad. i stole numbers from women's winner Rebecca Rusch's file. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/321574000

UPDATE: strava pulled the data directly off the 310xt. screw you garmin connect!

15:53 finish time. i would guess less than 30 minutes of non-riding time:
3-5 minutes at each CP (there were 3)
5-10min to change a rear flat and pee
3 (i think) stops to check/rearrange the map
2 (i think) additional pee stops
2 mount/dismounts to walk around mud hole and across creek
2 stops for bottle management
1 mount/dismount for a temper tantrum at the wind

Leg 1 - 0600 to 0921 = 3:21
cool temps, good groups to work with, and favorable winds helped me crush my estimated arrival time by 15 minutes. took some risks w HR but justified w the good conditions.

Leg 2 - 0924 to 1341 = 4:17
nasty nasty headwind for several long stretches in this section. was in an awesome group (TIM EK'S WHEEL!!!) for the first headwind section, we all worked together and crushed it. got a flat on the backside of Texaco Hill (rider error, poor line choice) and lost group. 2nd and 3rd major headwind stretches was alone and suffering. picked up by a paceline for the last few hard miles and worked to stay w them.

Leg 3 - 1345 to 1757 = 4:12
glorious 12 miles of tailwind to start this. rode solo and recovered from Leg 2. then turned back into the wind. solo for a bit, tough going, couldn't stay with anyone who passed me, finally made a huge effort to catch a line of 3 people. figured i could suffer slowly by myself or suffer faster with them. hated it but jumped on the wheel anyway. that group eventually broke apart but a few miles down the rode got picked up by some MO boys (incl OGRE winner Tyler) and they were in a generous mood, letting me draft gratuitously almost all the way to CP3.

Leg 4 - 1801 to 2153 = 3:52
in retrospect i left this CP as 5th place chica. got passed early by Corinna and her bf and they were GONE. went off course, corrected, and connected w Mark from Kuat. we were both off our "plan" so JRA, he had much more juice in the tank but decided to ride w me instead and chat. so awesome!!! got passed by Jenny and her San Antonio crew just before sunset, Mark tried to bridge me up to them but my bottle ejected and i stopped to save it, not really caring about the "race" at this point. I told Mark to go ahead and catch them, but he was fine w my slow pace. spectacular Lisa Frank purple/pink sunset. then darkness, a few map checks, and riding into a loud Emporia finish line! BOOM.

7th girl, 120th OA. did not meet my goal of 14:42 but i knew going in that that would have taken perfect conditions AND a group for the majority of time. 0/2 there. but i finished, and longest ride ever.

overall thoughts: i rode super aware of groups/dynamics and that was really fun. blatantly drafted as much as possible, did a little work at the front of some groups but def not my fair share. faded in the last 50 miles. i'd be curious to see if lower HR at beginning would have helped that. so many awesome riders out there. Tyler and Mark were spectacular. my brother crewed perfectly - 0 mistakes. sore knees, hands, and right PF but otherwise just normal body wear and tear. warbird was terrific all day. i like gravel.
