Adventure Race 22:43:00 [3]

Nats w Jeff and David as Alpine Shop

PROLOGUE/TREK 1
a short trek to split things up, we chose to get a 4-pointer and the 6-pointer. didn't feel super good running but that's normal for an AR start for me. finished our loop, grabbed paddle bag, ran down to the put-in. mass chaos at TA1. we chose to do all of our stuff at the top of the grassy "ramp" so then we just ran the boat down to the water and paddled out.

PADDLE 1
got going and had a really good paddle. passed NYARA and kept ahead of Rock/Creek til the very end. side note: Rock/Creek is a very similar store to Alpine Shop based in Chattanooga so it was good to paddle w them for a bit. fast-flowing Cumberland River was totally in Jeff's sweet spot and even though our boat kept drifting left he kept us moving really well.

TREK 2 (mini)
we took out in 4th, within a few minutes of first. still early in the race but super stoked. crossed a v busy highway then ran up to TA at the ampitheater. legs still not feeling awesome so i towed a bit on David's pack, a first for me. had a slow TA onto bikes with extra clothes and food. packs were so heavy (for a 24).

BIKE 1 (KOM)
and then we had to ride up a big hill, not ideal for our pack weight. we got passed by several teams but didn't let it bother us. just did our thing. got to the fire tower still in a big pack of folks. another chaos TA.

TREK 3
a short little thing but lots of climb. decent woods. good nav by David, missed one spur but corrected fast (thanks Rootstock for the tip-off). linked up w Kuat at the end of this and Rib Mtn in TA, fun folks. dumped a lot of food for the volunteers at this TA.

BIKE 2
back down the KOM and we went fast. love descending! then to 8 and 9 and into the ATV park via Hwy 119 which was a bit of an around-route but we chose it bc of anticipated wet trail conditions. this is where our race went south in a hurry, we missed trail #61, got on a big gravel road, and then decided to just bike-whack to the CP instead of backing out. well that bike-whack got all out of whack, was super slow, and we ended up just dropping bikes and running to CP 10, then had to run back. lots of time lost. then at CP 11 we discovered we had mis-punched (TA1 in the CP11 box)....such a bummer. then we were super careful for the remaining time on ATV trails which cost time as well. finally came into the TA where Carrie and Mary thought we were injured, it took so long. I asked "what place are we in?" and they said "you don't even want to know". so. time to eat some hot food from the chuck wagon and re-group.

PADDLE 2 (incl mini-trek to/from put-in)
little trek to the lake and then a short n sweet paddle on it. surprisingly warm. we used this time to have a team chat and re-commit to putting our mistake behind us and salvaging a good race. we really wanted top 10 which would clinch the USARA points title. so that was our goal. back into TA, more hot food from the chuck wagon, and we were ready to rock.

BIKE 3
rode up the big hill, got 20 and then had lots of fun on the mud to 21. then at 21 with Odyssey and... no passport. it accidentally got left at CP 20. so then we rode BACK to 20, almost all the way, until finding team Mashed Taters who had picked up our passport, saving a few minutes. thanks, dudes!!! then back to 21, punch, and down the hill which was again a blast to ride as much as possible. then roads back to TA. we arrived, learned we had made it back into 13th place, and were excited to put a solid trek together. David is so good at Night-O so we had high hopes.

TREK 4
went to 30 first and then clockwise. a pretty good route i thought and we executed really well. thought we could pull off a 5-hr trek, and then we attacked 23. spent LOTS of time scouring reentrants when the CP wasn't really hung in one. lots of veg to fight. but finally David pinged it and we punched, in the process showing Rock/Creek the CP location. whoops. ran back to TA.

FINISH LINE
finished in 10th place, just a few minutes behind Rib Mtn. 10th is what we needed but had no idea how far back Rock/Creek would be, plus Rib told us that WEDALI was just minutes behind them. agonizing. we needed a 20-minute cushion to hold on to 10th from our mis-punch penalty but both of those teams finished in that time frame, bumping us back to 12th overall. no USARA points. sad face.

the thing is we have had so many good races this season, really with no major mishaps, and it was just a matter of time before things exploded. just unfortunate that it all had to happen at the race and outcome i cared a lot about. and i don't want to be debbie-downer because 12th at Nats is a result that would thrill a lot of teams and i don't want to discredit any team who put their best effort out there. but for us, and knowing the result we had potential to achieve as a team, it is disappointing.

so then my focus became enjoying everyone's company at the awards banquet. so many good people that we don't get to see and visit with very often, it really was the "nerdy superbowl of our sport" and i tried to soak that up as much as possible (and also the pre-dinner beers w Bushwhacker, thank you do much!!!). didn't hurt that my boyfriend got to be the featured speaker of the evening and did an amazing job, so proud of him and the WEDALI crew. and got to invite everyone to the Castlewood 8-Hr AR on December 5th, our house is open to anyone who wants to race/volunteer and sleep on the floor for free!
