we were the first ones up to the summit on this day, passed a lot of teams on the way. however our early arrival meant that the sun had not risen and it was quite cold and extremely windy so didn't linger long. pics are horrible!

we took a seldom-used, local route back down to Barafu instead of the tourist trail. the route we used was an old scree drainage so we were able to "ski" down most of it. lots of fun.

After a short nap at Barafu, we were back on the trail descending to our last camp of the trip. cool to see the vegetation change from alpine desert to rainforest all in a few hours. trail was quite rocky and legs were shot afterwards.

another short out-n-back to help with altitude. saw a beautiful eagle (after further research, i believe it was a juvenile african hawk eagle) soaring over camp. after we climbed a little, we were above it. awesome.

Short day. Left my favorite camp, climbed the Barranco Wall which was easy compared to Lava Tower, and then descend+ascend Karanga Valley. we got some great echos from the valley and then had a whistling concert while climbing the other side. body felt the strongest of all trip. got a hot lunch in camp, luxury!

another long day with a big elevation gain before lunch. the approach to the Lava Tower was where I felt some serious altitude that my body didn't quite know what to do with. I was basically Lamaze breathing (or, my interpretation of the method since I don't really know) and walking really slow to cope. then climbing Lava Tower had some bouldering moves which I found quite fun.

first long day on the mountain. mostly easy hiking from forest to heather to moorland. passed through the entire Shira Crater, which is a remnant from the Shira Peak collapse, 500,000 years ago. camped on the western side of the mountain with an excellent view of the summit. so tall.

started hiking when the bus couldn't go any further on the jeep trail. and honestly, it had gotten quite farther than i had ever imagined. first mile was exposed, hot, and made me worry about the rest of the trip. once we got into the forest it was more manageable. first and only day we beat the porters into camp.

MAF with MK. kind of a weird one, I descended each mile by about :20 (which is completely opposite of how they're supposed to go) and had some left knee issues which caused me to switch mid-test to a more heel-strike form (which is also supposed to slow you down).

one result is the knowledge that in cold weather i probably need to warm up more. the other result is need to get back on the evening foam rolling.

but, as always, it great to run the sun up with good company!

Masters! Stroke Day! Butterfly!

I've never shown up on butterfly day because I'm scared. But somehow I forgot which day it was and, much to my amazement, swam my first strokes of butterfly and didn't drown! In fact it was fun! Arms were mega tired at the end but very proud!
