Epic 150, shortened on Friday to Epic 128, shortened during the race to Epic 68. rained all night and all day so the MO creeks were rising by the moment. the lead group made it thru one creek but several moments later, my "group" did not so we backtracked to a gas station (CP 1) and were re-routed from there back to finish line. overall a good day to practice riding in the rain. temps were reasonable. Adventure Race 10:12:00 [3]

Off Road Rage 12hr AR w Jeff and Jason Bettis of Team Kuat.

there were not enough canoes for all teams so we had a draw at the start on which discipline to start on...trek, bike, or paddle. we drew bike, along w Toporadicals!

BIKE 1, 40k
around the south side of Lake Perry. we were a bit late to start due to last-minute map prep (old USGS map, outdated roads and no trails...lots of copying) so we took off in back of pack. caught everyone by the 1st CP but the first 4 CPs it seemed all took some hunting so we were in the group for all of them. we were able to get away a bit but came in to TA in 2nd place to a 2p male team. also in the pre-race frenzy i forgot my tracker so no gps track. headwind most of the time so we did a lot of double-towing!

TREK 1
at Military Trail area. longest trek of the race...about 2hrs? thick veg made it hard to see stuff but not a ton of thorns. Jason was super good at moving thru it so i just tried to keep up! cool rocky trails that we used for a bit.

BIKE 2, 20k
around the north end of Lake Perry to the MTB trails. mostly gravel/pavement but a short bit on secret singletrack, more rocky! more double towing.

TREK 2
at the MTB trails area. this was supposed to be a bike but was switched at pre-race mtg due to wet forecast. honestly it was better as a trek i thought. we didn't get a trail map so it was a lot of guess work on Jason's part, knowing when to use trails (they were packed in there) vs. when to cut thru. but he was focused and really clean!

BIKE 3, 5k
back to Race HQ, short n sweet.

TREK 3
around the Race HQ area. thick vegetation and hard to see contours. some tricky CP placements but again Jason was super clean and me and Jeff just tried to keep up! we had a cool team nav moment en route to CP1, it was a long leg but we kept track of our location and hit it well.

PADDLE 1, 4k
short out n back but it was super windy so a good thing. also race rules were only 2 paddlers per boat so i sat in the middle and navved. it was awesome!!

overall this was a good race, we worked super well together as a team and fun to hear Jason's stories as well. the maps were tough to work with and veg was thick, but he did a great job. i felt better physically than i was expecting! so happy to be able to push the pace. beautiful weather too, despite the wind, and happy to be out in the sunshine.

bike ride to collect 28 and 51. up the double track to johnson mtn, another trip to the overlook (really should be a CP here instead of the boring rock pile at the true summit), then down the logging trail to the lake.

i got a strava QOM on the downhill on my rigid hard tail :))) in the rain.

actually the downhill had a re-routed section which dumped us out at the bottom of the dam instead of the singletrack like it used to. so we had to hike up the backside of the dam and then return to car on the singletrack, while raining, didn't go too badly!! fun day on bikes :)

unofficial Ozark Nav Challenge w Erl and T. we helped Andrei get the 12-hour racers started and then took off about 8am with the intent of a 6 hour trek. i was navving and we had Tess with so we kept the pace EZ. i have been navving well lately but a mistake out at CBL can be hard to relocate. so just didn't make mistakes :)

super fun trip up Johnson Mtn, beautiful at the overlook (no CP there just a scenic detour). there was water in most of the creeks so we kept T wet plus she was drinking from our bladders a lot. also i chose routes to bring us close to water when possible. like from 32 to 24 we just tramped in the creek instead of over a spur. it was a really beautiful little creek so a fun route choice!

probably the biggest error on my part was a parallel error on way to 53 but i knew it could happen and when the spur we were on bent, we bashed our way over the the next one and BAM...CP. we were on pace for a 6hr return but the veg around 53 was miserable and slowed us way down.

but anyway a super fun day in the woods, T was so well behaved and enthusiastic and so fun to have her along. Erl helped me a lot w keeping focused on nav, ignoring unmapped roads, and staying on bearing. also it helped me to say our routes out loud to him, so we could both watch for features and check them off.

so even though we were a bit late back, still time to run in to town to get pizza for the racers and then cheer them all in. great job Andrei and Mike for organizing, we all had fun!

i think these road shoes are a main cause to my L hammy/calf/heel pain. they ARE 400 miles old. and of course Brooks stopped making the racer. considering Hoka Clifton or Clayton???

Adventure Race 7:19:00 [3] 43.51 mi (10:05 / mi) +4432ft 9:12 / mi

Lightning Strikes 8-hr AR w Biz and Erl!

BIKE 1, CPs 1-3
quick 100m run to the bikes and then full gas on the gravel roads of Northern IL. some trouble w the 1st CP but then smooth sailing. the farms in this area are really pretty.

TREK 1, CPs 4-14 plus bonus A, B, C, D
trek in Pacific Palisades SP. we had pre-plotted map for CPs 4-14, had to go in order, and at some CPs there were bonus maps for the alpha controls. so a little OOB action just because we didn't have the total route. but we motored thru and were catching teams who were skipping the alphas. fun to see people in the woods!

BIKE 2, CP E
back to camp via alternate route to get bonus CP E. it was hung across the road from a pasture with a bunch of baby calves. i love baby calves. i wanted to just hang out at that CP and talk to them. but we kept going.

TREK 2, CPs 15-20 plus ropes
ropes included a zipline, ascent, and rappel. we did those first to avoid bottlenecks and then some more trekking around camp for a couple more CPs. crossed the river/creek a bunch which was really refreshing. it is at perfect packrafting levels right now. it was so funny to do this in the daylight when normally we are doing a version of this trek at the end of T-Rolls in the dark. flashback to 2016 when we were way behind, trekking in the dark and just struggling. in the daytime it is much nicer.

then we rode over to L&C (at the bottom), locked the bikes in the woods, and ran a loop. kinda shuffled and towards the end i felt SUPER out of shape. but that's what happens after basically taking 3 weeks off.

Bike 1:04:55 [3] 10.42 mi (9.6 mph) +414ft
ahr:141 max:176 shoes: Niner Air9 RDO

then a ride back to the car via the last bit of LV. with a stop first at the Weldon Spring Research Center where the bridge has been repaired and is open! huzzah!
