Adventure Race 28:43:00 [3]
72c

WABAR winner.
http://instagram.com/p/ozOB3CEmfl/

maps at 0430, start at 0600. pretty busy race morning but that's the name of the game.

TREK 1, Lake Nokimis, CPs 1-6, 5.5mi
opening prologue/separator, some woods stuff and then roads/Hiawatha Trail, back to Race HQ

BIKE 1, to Treehaven, CPs 7-9, 15mi
mostly roads, mostly paved

TREK 2, Treehaven, CPs 10-21, 6.5mi
woods/marsh, some PP to avoid.

BIKE 2, thru Rhinelander, CPs 22-25, 27mi
again mostly roads, mostly paved

SPECIAL CHALLENGE
bike polo at put-in/TA

PADDLE 1, WI River, CPs 26-29, 5.5mi
upstream/tailwind from Hat Dam to Rhinelander

TREK 3, CPs 30-33, 1.2k
near Rhinelander, we did not wear pants.

PADDLE 2A, WI River, no CPs, 5.5mi
downstream/headwind to the dam, portage over, put back in.

PADDLE 2B, WI River, CPs 34-35, 7mi
downstream, golden hour. a beautiful river. one of the most enjoyable paddles i have been on.

TREK 4, CPs 36-43, 4.5mi
in gas line area. started in daylight but needed lights just at the finish.

PADDLE 3, WI River, no CPs, 5mi
finished out the downstream paddle

BIKE 3A, to Washburn, CP44, 20mi
roads at night, tailwind almost the whole way, we flew

BIKE 3B, Washburn/Perch Lake singletrack, 3 CPs, 6mi
"ride this loop until you find the flag". rainy and v challenging trails = v slow team.

TREK 5, Washburn, CPs 45-70, 8mi
wet the entire time, lots of bugs too. incredible nav by Garrison w Space Monkey back-up. rocky33 on punch duty. i just tried to keep up :) and admin duty - keeping track of 25 rogaine CPs and their clues to make sure we didn't miss any. also saw a bear!

BIKE 4, to Lake Nokimis, CPs 71-72, 15mi
sandy gravel back to the finish line. dice w a solo at the end and we threw down!

cannot say enough good things about 180 Adventure's organization. all 72+ CPs in right spot, perfect logistics, Paula sent us thru some beautiful WI terrain. enjoyed myself so much. great prep race for CT, we kept the pace steady and smooth. go WABAR!

BIKE 83mi
TREK 25.5mi minimum...TREK 5 seemed way longer than 8mi!
PADDLE 23mi

Adventure Race 11:00:00 [3]

PPP 18hr, Alpine Shop, me/Jeff/David. late arrival at Race HQ, frantic pre-race prep. divided on conquered between the 3 of us and barely made the start.

TREK 1, CPs 1-10, 3.5k redline
w MRA and Toporadicals at beginning, lost MRA around CP3, lost T-rad at CP9

BIKE 1, no CPs, 2k back to HQ
in the lead, no one in sight.

ROPES, CP11
short mash-up of tyrolean and zipline. pointless. but no line. took extra time at HQ to fix mistakes we made at the start - air in Jeff's tires, headlamp in my pack, contacts in David's eyes, topped off water. https://www.facebook.com/silkychrome/posts/1010046...

BIKE 2, CPs 12-18, 22mi
roads, rails-to-trails, roads. thru beautiful farmland in a beautiful sunset. non-beautiful winds but boys did a ton of work. we felt good.

TREK 2, CPs 19-24, 2.5k redline
loop at Baptist Camp. we got map and thought "short-n-EZ". it was not. thick thorny underbrush, zero visibility, we were soon caught by MRA and T-rad. unmapped trails everywhere. got stuck on CP21 "naked tree" and floundered in the woods, hard to relocate on subtle features and slow going. came out of the woods 30min behind MRA and even w T-rad. we were not pleased.

BIKE 3, CPs 25-27, 8.5mi
chased hard. i helped pull. giddy up. made up 10min on MRA.

PADDLE 1, CPs 28-32, 9mi
quick TA, now in 2nd alone, short upstream paddle for first CP, then downstream on flooded Rock River. got a split on MRA at CP31, an out-n-back paddle up trib creek, then we overshot the flag by about 700m (we were expecting the clue to be obvious and did not pay attention to map) and gave all that time back. had a team pep talk in the boat as we resumed the chase of MRA who had their 30min lead back, and then some.

PORTAGE, CP33
about 900m, we crushed this. boys carried banana boat on their shoulders and i had everything else. we ran it. stoked.

TREK 3A, CPs 34-43, 4k redline
Meadow loop. we had readjusted our minds and declared that every CP would be a fight against the terrain and veg. so were super conservative with nav/pace, supportive of each other, and relentless in our focus. again, tons of unmapped trails AND ROADS going everywhere, but at least the veg was better. caught MRA around CP37 which took us 4 attacks. from there we bounced ahead and cautiously worked our way through the rest of the CPs.

TREK 3B, CPs 44-46, 4mi
then a mostly urban trek back to Race HQ. ran it, boys were strong and my hammies were not. but i just wanted to be done so kept up best i could. 1st place overall.

could not be prouder of our effort. this was a race against the mind. terrain and distances were not esp challenging, but the CP locations were so tricky. not even technical-tricky, just plain in the middle of nowhere, and often hung low so hard to see more than 5m away. David did a beautiful job adjusting nav strategy on the Meadow trek and we held it together from there. also punched our ticket to USARA Nats!

swapped out my 675mm bars for Peat's 580mm, with the thinking it might be more comfy over the long haul. my handling might suffer a little but we'll see. took SegSlayer out for a spin and got stuck in a huge t-storm. legs had no energy either!

w Brett. i requested the sled. i think it is one of the most helpful things for me - simulates hard uphill hike, plus w straight arms and low hold is great core focus. also cool that my work set weight for DL (165#) was my PR when i first started at PD. progress!

Adventure Race 3:20:51 [4] 38.73 mi (5:11 / mi) +688ft 5:06 / mi

Goomna 6hr w Jeff and David. race is known for minimal nav (they have signs pointing to CPs) and weird challenges. 0700 got maps, 4 bike CPs to plot, any order, start at 0900. we knew MTZ was fast so purposefully started opposite direction as them. overshot first CP, and ran into MTZ, somehow our plans did not work, whatevs.

CP1 - drop bikes, run 0.6mi to local gym, shoot free throws, we each have to each make 3, penalty 5 sit-ups and 5 push-ups for each miss. chaos. jeff completes first, then me, then david, run 1k back.

CP2 - drop bikes, run 1mi to local park, complete 45 pull-ups per team. we didn't see race staff at park so ran around for a while before finding correct location. then i did like 4 pull-ups and the boys knocked the rest out. run back. MTZ has 6min lead.

CP3 - drop bikes, run 0.5mi to local hospital, team relay: wheelchair + burpees + plank, then stretcher carry, then slosh pipe/balance beam, then word puzzle, then reverse everything, run back. MTZ 5min lead.

CP4 - drop bikes, run 0.4mi on 260* bearing, complete 60 team box jumps, run back. MTZ has 2min lead at start but screws up their bearing and disappears. we get back to our bikes in lead, get directions for CP5.

CP5 - drop bikes, catch a fish (no joke, in a lake w a pole and everything). david catches one in 5sec. run 0.6mi on 1* bearing, punch, run back.

then we rode back to finish and got 3 new CPs, all bike, 20mi road loop. noticeable winds out of S/W. towed/pacelined whole thing, great pace, stayed ahead of MTZ, win!

fun sesh w Brett. whose idea was it to make the MM Ladder renegade? oh yes. mine. the OH hold at the end snapped my wrists.

lap of Berryman w a crew: Jeff, Dwayne, Goober, SS Kate (on gears), Peat, Caroline. we had plans for a double, so i led the first lap at EZ Emily endurance pace. also i cleared a LOT of spiderwebs and small sticks. just focused on riding smooth and not working too hard. about mi 21 Dwayne's chainring sheared off his spider, so we rode even easier back to BMCG, then decided to keep legs happy and call it a day. rest week!

Paddle 1:05:00 [3] 3.9 mi (3.6 mph)

put in at CW w Jeff, paddled upstream on the Meramec to the slough next to Chubb. got t-stormed on almost immediately but warm and lightning passed quickly.
12 PM

Run 1:15:00 [3] 6.5 mi (11:32 / mi) +900ft 10:12 / mi
shoes: Brooks Cascadia M7.5 green I

beached the canoe in a perfect spot to hop on the Chubb. ran to the West Tyson parking lot and back, aka all the good stuff of Chubb. saw 2 mama deer w babies, one of the babies walked right up to Jeff, so close he could have pet it. it was soooooooo cute. soaking wet when we started and stayed that way after the rain broke - humid!
1 PM

Paddle 41:00 [3] 3.9 mi (5.7 mph)

and then paddled back to CW. this time i was in the back, practicing for CT if needed. MUCH easier to steer a boat w double blades. got some good river reading practice too although not much to read on this part of the Meramec.

good chat all day. this was my first weekend in town without a big event since...April!?!? needed some chill time w my teammates. nice to trade DK and Mohican stories.
