body weight stuff.

was all set to go to the OT ride, rushed out of work, and halfway there realized i forgot my battery on the charger under my desk. dumb! but gave me time to get a lot of stuff done around my apt which needed doing before leaving for MN. also a little extra rest for the achilles.

Bike (commute) 20:00 [2] 4.6 mi (13.8 mph)

BRR MNR. wound up in a group w local speedypants MattyD so was determined to keep up. i'm sure this was recovery pace for him but i was able to keep up a coherent conversation most of the time. stoked on the pace. not stoked on a super tight R achilles after. :/

8 AM

Bike 3:17:00 [3] 46.0 mi (14.0 mph) +3800ft
ahr:148 shoes: LeMond Tourmalet

w Dwayne, Matt, Chuck, and Doug. rode from Matt's house in Festus and just followed his loop. I love road rides like this!! 16F at the start but toasty w the Faskerkatts + chem warmers and bar mitts. this ride was exactly what I needed coming off of the tough run yesterday. and also the reason why I am so stoked about Team Noah - good people, good mojo, crazy enough to ride early on the coldest day of the year so far. big things to come. oh yeah!!

fresh batteries in the Ptap and it's back in action! 130 AW on this one.
8 PM

Run 1:07:00 [3] 6.0 mi (11:10 / mi) +250ft 10:45 / mi

9 AM

Run 1:38:00 [3] 7.6 mi (12:54 / mi) +1100ft 11:20 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 W9

playing in the GF woods w Jeff and David. some trail, some off-trail, some road. a lot of stops to pee and check the map, but no one cared since it felt like forever since we've trained together and nice to be reunited. Carrie rode her mtb around too. 30F...chillay!
11 AM

Run 2:08:00 [3] 10.1 mi (12:40 / mi) +1000ft 11:35 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 W9

then my buddies had to go but i still wanted a long run so went solo. explored the horse trails that i rarely use, and even went to the stables to say hi to the fuzzy beasts. then around 1hr in, i realized i was not having fun. strange for me, and not why i do this stuff. ate 400cal quick, which helped a little, but still had to dig deep to finish out the trail. good mental training, and a reminder that the struggle is real!

6 PM

Bike 2:35:00 [3] 36.5 mi (14.1 mph) +1600ft
ahr:145 shoes: Salsa Warbird

this week OT wanted to go longer than the normal route so he recruited me and jim to ride with. good thing too because there was a veritable peloton of people who showed up and that big of a group on the Katy makes me nervous. so i was happy to roll out slightly ahead of the herd in our group of 3.

we did the opening 15ish miles of the normal route, then descended the sketch gravel of matson hill to sort of loop backwards on the route and tack on an extra 12mi. we passed everyone else going the opposite way and it was awesome to see so many lights out there. given the extra mileage we kept the pace on the chill side which was great. lucky to have such awesome riding buddies.

Bike 2:15:00 [3] 17.5 mi (7.8 mph) +2000ft
ahr:137 shoes: Niner Air9

w Jeff and Carrie at GF. crazy weather...super warm to start, then rain, then thunderstorm, then way windy. we did the race loop backwards and got hit with the rain about midway thru. that plus the leaves made the trail super slick so we bailed to the doubletrack thru Rockwoods. Zee had caught up to us so we all rode together.

12 PM

Run 3:09:00 [3] 16.0 mi (11:49 / mi) +1900ft 10:37 / mi
ahr:151 shoes: Brooks Cascadia W9 blue

stashed the Battlefinch in the woods and then 2x Lewis loop at L&C. the goal was 3hrs or 17mi, whichever came first, all under a HR cap of 155. LSD. TOF. TNSTAAFL.

everything felt pretty good other than i started to get a little frustrated going slow. but i know it's important and has worked well for me in the past so stayed disciplined. saw MarkG on my second loop which was awesome! started to get windy and rainy towards the end which was not amusing. built a lot of post-crash confidence on the downhills and on the last one let it rip a little - felt so good!
3 PM

Bike 2:19:00 [3] 30.0 mi (12.9 mph) +1300ft

HAULED for 2+ miles, including the long grind up skinker! finally caught them at the top of the hill and then enjoyed a nice chatty run w lynne! finished out w a 400m sprint which i made my first seg ever! trying to track progress for PMETR.

not quite The Hour That Champions Are Born, but close! cruised EZ and solo. passed a church advertising their sermon's title as "Attitude of Gratitude". perfect theme for the day. rode out to The Wolf for a delicious granola bar that somehow wasn't quite as delicious as i remember them being previously, i think their chocolate/cranberry/oatmeal ratio was off. but coffee was awesome! the Ptap is back after its summer vacation so i put that on the Tour Mallet for some data. joke's on me though because the wheel flatted at about my farthest point out. and then the battery died. but Attitude of Gratitude prevailed! permagrin on this ride. i like bikes.

7.3k red course at Meramec State Park, set by Gary. after last year's emotional meltdown at this meet, i was determined to stay on the map - super focused on keeping a short-term plan in my head and made myself slow down whenever i forgot said plan or got distracted. i still made plenty of mistakes but caught myself with all of them and was able to relocate without too much trouble. even nailed a few tricky ones by being very careful. and then i dropped my punchcard at control #8 so none of it mattered anyway! Attitude of Gratitude! what a gorgeous, glorious day to be out in the woods! ebuckley with the win in 65 minutes.

OT's night ride. aka EK gets crushed by guys twice her age.

i grudge the drive out to the mound, and almost didn't make it tonight bc of traffic. very nearly bailed, but made it w 10min to kit up and go. the guys just outclassed me the whole time. i knew they were fast, but really, this fast? dang! couldn't hang on the Katy, definitely couldn't hang up Terry or any of the following rollers. ha! sort of embarrassing but whatevs, i just went hard when i could and recovered when i had to. and they waited for me whenever there was a tricky turn. super nice night to be out! Skirmish Turkey also pleasant to ride after being cooped up all summer.

pacing Jim at OT100, starting at Hazel Creek (68.4) and ending at Henpeck Hollow (97.1).

we did a lot of hiking but i'm still logging as a run. so there. also counting for Sat AND Sun of 30runs30days.

when i picked Jim up about 9.30p he had just come off of a great 25mi stint w his first pacer and main training buddy Jamie. i don't know Jim as well and so it took some time to figure out exactly how i could help him best - turned out i should have had an eating reminder set on my garmin every 30min and our pace enabled on my display to help set tempo better. but we had a great first seg to Pigeon Roost.

then in the short 5.4mi seg to Berryman, things went south a little. we got caught in a little race w 2 other runners and Jim, feeling fresh from the hot food at Pigeon Roost, was able to push the pace slightly and I happily complied. turns out the elevated pace did not make his stomach happy and we had to slow way down, letting the 2 others go on ahead. Jim couldn't eat anything and was puking.

once we limped into Berryman CG (81.3), i made him sit, get covered w blankets, and EAT. he managed 3 cups of hot choc, 1 cup noodles, and several pretzels. good boy. we also both added several layers since it was COLD - ranging from 30-40F depending on where you were on the ridge/reentrant terrain.

heading outbound from Berryman CG we had a tough 8.8mi seg on the Berryman Trail. Jim was not moving well - gimpy, unstable, foggy. but i know this section of trail really well so i broke things down into landmarks to move us through the long seg. we even passed 1 person. Jim's stomach was hanging by a thread but he dug super deep and got it done one step at a time.

we repeated the sit/blankets/eat routine at Billy's Branch (90.1) and it worked well again. more hot choc, more noodles, more pretzels and this time even some saltines. great! the sunrise started shortly after leaving this aid station and that helped a ton. with the increasing light, Jim was able to smell the barn and throw down some impressive power hiking. we made it to Henpeck Hollow (97.1) with full steam and he elected not to even stop (there were 2-3 other runners in close pursuit) so I got Jamie set to go and then sent him chasing down the trail for the final 6.5 miles. 28:34!

i have been wanting to be an ultra pacer for a long time, like 2 years maybe, and was so thrilled to get the chance w Jim who i know is super gritty and tough. he certainly proved it today. so fun to hang out w Jamie, Sarah, and Jake too. we worked seamlessly together and after finishing no one really wanted to leave. sign of a good weekend.

but! i def do NOT want to do a 100 anytime soon. these are TOUGH events, so many problems to solve, and it seems the stakes are higher. AND with the long recovery, not many do-overs in a season. a 50, maybe, but for now i'll stick to pacing the hundos.
