Adventure Race 23:05:00 [3]

Tomahawk. great race by the team, and great event by the RD!

TREK 1, 9mi redline, 1-12
12 CPs thru Harmonie SP and into New Harmony town. we started aggressively and pushed the pace the whole time. really proud of this trek. i think we beat all of the 8hr teams to TA1 even though they had a headstart and less CPs :) Heather and Eric from Adventure Capitalists/BDAR tagged along for the first few controls and it was really fun to have some company for a bit!

PADDLE 1, 2.7mi up, 22.5mi down, 13-19
in the banana boats on the Wabash River. me/Erl and David/Jeff. upstream to the Black River for a CP, then downstream for a long ways to another small river/channel, upstream on that and back down, then to TA2. a cool paddle, some rapids even. TA2 times: https://www.facebook.com/NoSleepAR/photos/a.539126...

BIKE 1, 21mi, 20-25
ate a ton of food in TA and rode strong, mostly gravel/paved roads with some tough headwind sections. TA back at Race HQ.

TREK 2, 5.8mi redline, 26-30
then we got 90% of the remaining CPs. changed into comfy shorts!! and pants for this trek starting at dusk. ran hard as we could, no real nav problems just some thick thick veg. saw BW on their bikes and heard they had a big nav error on the paddle. TA back at Race HQ.

BIKE 2 w ROPES, 24mi, 31-44
some horse trails at first and then actual mtb singletrack...omg SWEEEEET!!! like really really fun. i had no idea these trails existed about 2hr away from STL. we had a blast. ropes in the middle was a Tyrolean traverse, not all that exciting but a very pro set-up. then the singletrack after that was less giggle-inducing, it was newer/rougher/scarier but we got it done. some roads to finish out this leg.

TREK 3, 2mi redline, 47-51 (Indian Mound Farm)
we thought it would be a tough go to clear the course at this point, and this was proved correct as the veg on this section was horrible. and no trails/roads to use as a work-around. so we dropped the farthest 2 CPs out of 5 total. got kinda sleepy here and questioning "what is the point of this trekking leg" because it was just a loop of endless briars.

BIKE 3, 6.5mi, 45-46
shorty back to the finish line. final punch in a culvert w 3ft of water.

super awesome race. 40 LB Sledgehammer totally nailed this first-year event. i was most impressed by the amount of safety personnel on ocurse - 2 or 3 safety boats in the water, EMS at every TA, full-on command trailer at Race HQ, it was so cool to see the surrounding communities embrace the event.

we got a penalty for my red bike blinkie not functioning. it was blinking at the start of the race but batteries ran out and race staff penalized us. totally deserved and we were lucky the 1hr time penalty did not affect overall standings.
