Germantown MetroPark East, 6.1/350
Meet 11, course 14

Muddy and green but technically more challenging than most local meets. I had a good time on this but never felt like I could run particularly fast except on the couple of road-rich segments. Messed up one leg (11) by misreading the creek fork. Slow on 6 in the complex reentrants (needed some way to simplify this further; lost a minute or two on 12 (vegetation boundary has moved east). Some how got crushed on 18 and the finish split by Aragorn. He went back to the trail on 18 and I followed the S side of the fence (Could I have fallen asleep?)

Climb felt hard where it was but estimate was definitely high.

Note

Wrap-up: Looks like my race was 27.4 miles and 1140ish climb with about 13 min waiting at shuttle points. Pace was 10:40/k; as a team and with shorter times at the shelter, I could have probably pushed on for 10/k but I am definitely good with this!

Its Spring!!

OLOU Mad Otter Goatgaine, 19.9 km + score-o.
Meet 10, course 13

This was a blast. First, thanks to Bruce and his team for putting 120 controls in the woods for the weekend and arranging a novel race. The first 19.9 km straightline was a three-part goat sans forking. Each segment had progressively harder navigation and went back through the start area. Went out fast, trying to stay as close to Aragorn and Ben King as possible, keeping in contact through C4. Managed to be stay within 13 min at the end of loop 1, lost a 5 more min in the 2nd loop and less on loop 3. My only time losses were some confusion right before the slide (90 s of slow motion), a long planning delay at C10 (60 s), and poor paths through the veg at C22, 25 (this area could be mapped in green bars because the open forest hurts). There were some complexities with car shuttles and I took an unplanned rest of 18 min waiting for a ride at the wrong time, i.e. before the finish of the goat (this was matched with Aragorn looking for the missing control for 20 min, and neither issue affected any results so it was just some character on the day). Started the rogaine in the north with Jim Benton and Ben Hart. Good navigation on the whole rogaine section, so very little time was lost but my legs were pretty mushy. Got 10 controls in the N then really caught the shuttle to the SE (no track from here). Excellent terrain close to the small creek so I was happy I went (pits, rocky shelves and waterfalls). Executed ok here, a bit of solo conversation to keep on task and move faster, finally making a very long climb to the pickup. Waited patiently for Aaron's team to return, but ultimately returned quickly and alone. Jumped out, got a final time check and hurled for 3 more bags. Finished as fast as I could across the grass heading for the musical cowbells as the clock ran out at 8.00 hrs. 2nd on the trail race to Aragorn only because Ben K. retired. These guys really moved. Managed a happy win on the overall race, especially since there were many competitors that could have (can it be true that Jim Benton goes faster and faster as the day goes on??!). The otter is an excellent remembrance for the coming of spring 2016.

Started my watch late and ran out of juice so the additional distance will get uploaded in a day or so (I expect the total is 28.5-29 miles (46 km) and 1050-1100 m climb)
