RTH w Lambert and Logie

Last winter I set myself up with a little project ...to qualify for 2017 NYC marathon sometime during the year. As the winter and spring quickly evaporated it clearly became apparent it would be a fall endeavor. Finally in mid September with only a few weeks to go until the Burlington MEC Half (my original targeted race) I faced the reality that I needed to actually do some training and dug into my little project with considerable focus. Mileage up'd from zero to 70-85km per week, complete with speed work, tempo runs, hill work, recovery runs and long runs. Taking into account my late start and family commitments the race schedule natural formed and I set up four distinct goals:

1. STWM - Half ...easy sub-90
2. The Bad Thing ...sub 5hr
3. Hamilton Road2Hope ...sub-85min or bust
4. RTH ...win.

All the eggs were in one basket at Road2Hope and it was my biggest focus.

Sadly now that my season is closed I can look back at four fails. Despite having been lazy about logging on AP, every step is logged over on Garmin Connect and I certainly was not trying to closet train as some used to do back in the day. But despite not being here on AP I had a great fall season with a lot of fun in my training and four ever so close misses:

1. STWM - Half: 90:53
2. The Bad Thing: 5:09
3. Hamilton Road2Hope: 85:15
4. RTH: 2nd.

...I can't explain the mental lapse I faced over the last 1200m of the Hamilton Half.

Congrats to TheGriz, Trav, and Marie on their win at the 50th anniversary of HKF/GHO/DGL celebration! I will admit I wanted this bad after missing my NY qualifier six days earlier. No one else I'd rather go down to than theGriz ...a man that I mentally channel when I'm hammering through the bush (my inner monologue "...be like Mark" "...find the opening" "...stay smooth"). Totally deserved on their part after we led from Cheedoke and I apparently switched my brain off on walk the line and missed the little deviation from the bike path on a section of single track. It was actually the non-orienteer on our team (Lambert) that caught our oversight. Had he not we would have never doubled back been none the wiser for it. But as we did the double back I didn't even look up at Marky Marky as I knew it was over and they'd be fools to let the opening pass. Infact in reviewing my HR data, I hit my recorded max for the day right as we realized the mistake and made the turn around.

A great day in the woods and big thank you to Hammer, Atropos, Sudden, Anvil, Ettoile, and anyone else that put their time in. From my past experiences with RTR (aka GRR), I know what kind of heavy lifting is involved in running these things. I love that we all take our turn so that we can in turn have fun playing in the woods with our friends!

NYC 2018 ...who's in?
