Bicycle 1:00:00 [1]

Commute to work with a side trip to the dentist for a teeth scraping session. As I was getting worked on at the dentist, I noticed that they were playing Led Zeppelin throughout the office. I thought it was cool, as I was recently at a Container Store where they played Christian music. Back at the dentist office, the mood was suddenly changed when the next song came on, Disco Duck. Noooooo! The dentist is the devil. He tortures you both physicaly and mentally!

Orienteering race 20:00 [4]
shoes: Jala X-Controls sz 9.5

Sprint Relay
I ran the second leg and thought I was doing okay, but suddenly I crossed a fence where I didn't think a fence should be. I wandered around and figured out where I was. How I got there was a mystery. I hit my control right after Eric Buckley and chased him into the go control and passed off to our 3rd runner who was Sergei Preobrazhensky, an 18-year old from Ohio. At the download I found out that I had mispunched the control just before crossing the fence (that explains why I was over there) and the go control (curse you Eric!).

Paula and I had some time, so we visited the art museum in Denver. Saw some pretty cool stuff. We needed about another hour to see everything, but we had to get going.

US Long Championship
This was a mass start event with no forking. Did well on the first 3 controls then I messed up #4. As I was relocating, I saw Alex Kleshchev and simultaneously smashed my right knee on a stump. Crunched that poor stump. I felt that I showed a surprising amount of restraint by not using the full complement of swear words that usually pour so eloquently from my face in times such as this.

Eventually found #4 then attempted #5 and failed again. Wandered around, then relocated way out on the road and came in and found it. There was no way I was going to do the rest of the course with my bum ankle and sore knee, so I packed it in. Sat by the finish chute and cheered people in. While waiting for Paula and feeling slightly evil, I worked on training Jan's girlfriend's dog to bark. He was barking anyway, so every time it did, I would run over and say, "Good boy!" and pet him on the head. Paula eventually finished and did not let me forget it for the rest of the weekend.

This time we went to Old Colorado City and walked around the shops. Then we went to the Olympic Training Center. Met Rulon Gardner, the greco roman wrestling champion. He is about my height, but 3 times as thick. His hands are about the size of baseball mitts. It was cool to meet him even though I thought that Karelin deserved to win the match.

I showed Paula all of the places where I lived when I worked in Colorado Springs. Some looked about the same and some looked pretty run down. Too bad that the owners didn't maintain the properties.

Orienteering race 45:00 [3]

Paula and I got a late flight to Denver late Thursday night. Met an odd guy on the shuttle bus out to the rental cars. He was going to a Christian rock concert out at Red Rocks. It was entertaining to watch him dance around on the bus obliviously singing in a I-don't-realize-I'm-singing-because-I-have-headphones-on tone of voice.

Our car rental wasn't as smooth as usual, but it did result in a better car because I answered the big question correctly, "Would you like the minivan or the PT Cruiser convertible?"

We drove to a Denver hotel, then got up very early in the morning to drive to Woodland Park. Stopped at a Waffle House in Castle Rock to fuel up.

Jogging to my start, I turned my left ankle on the *road*. Idiot. In my defense, there was a rut in the road. I lost a couple of minutes on my first control. JJ caught me at about control #3. I ran with him for several controls with the both of us running slightly different routes. The one time I had a concrete attackpoint which was a big depression in a long reentrant, I screwed it up and found a control from another course. JJ, on the other hand, ran down the broad vague spur and nailed it.

Afterwards, we put the top down and drove to the top of Pike's Peak for donuts. Saw a marmot on the way up and ravens at the top.

For dinner we went to the Golden Bee at the Broadmoor. It is an English style pub with drinking glasses that are either a yard tall (36 inches) or 1/2 yard. Paula was incapable of finishing her 1/2 yard of beer. What a wuss. We then walked around the lake at the resort.

On the way back to Woodland Park, we went through Garden of the Gods. Showed her the "Two Camels Kissing" and the "Dog Peeing on a Fire Hydrant". Okay, the second thing doesn't exist, but Paula liked the camels. There was also a rock formation that I call "The Lab" because it looks like Annie, our dog.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1]

Checked and flagged the rest of my control locations. Was out running around all day. I was pretty happy with all of my control locations. Got all of the control and map edits entered when I got home late at night.

Running warm up/down 24:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance1122 sz 10 w D

10 min warmup from the truck. 14 min cooldown from mid hill. Wore a new pair of running shoes today. Ordered them from Zappo.com. They arrived overnight with no charge for shipping. They also don't charge for return shipping if you don't wear them outside.

Running hills 21:00 [3]

3x to the top of Bald Hill. 6:36, 6:55, 7:22. Fastest runs in a long time. Saw 3 very fit girls on the hill this morning, one of them was Paula. We often see cross country and track girls from OSU jogging out there. I would love to see what they could do in orienteering.
