Golfing 9:00 [1]
spiked:1/9c slept:9.0 (rest day)

Awful play - in part because my legs and back were so tight from the weekend. Ended up shooting 48. But we won 31-9, thanks to our opponents plus Scott's 40.

Orienteering race 2:32:17 [3] 11.9 mi (12:48 / mi)
slept:7.0

WRE Long hosted by WCOC

Not as bad as yesterday, navigation-wise; however, it is clear that my leg (groin) problems, which have destroyed the little flexibility that I have, severely impact my ability to run through the woods. The smallest down logs require stopping and stepping over, small boulders that I should be able to jump onto are barriers that I have to go around. Many times I had to put my knee on the ground when I was climbing, because I couldn't lift my foot to the next spot it needed to go.

The slower running led to better navigation, but far too often I found myself running "straight" for 200-300m, then making sure the map matched where I was, instead of running off the features. Several times I found myself on a trail that I had not seen on the map - sometimes, I never found the trail until I was done with the race and in the sunshine.

Despite those reasons for frustration, the biggest problem is clearly not enough training for running thru the woods. So, I need to work on that before the trip out west for US and NA Champs. I also need to figure out a cure for the groin problem (I can barely put on my left sock).

Running warm up/down 5:00 [2] 0.59 mi (8:30 / mi)

Mostly just the jog to the start.

Orienteering race 1:12:29 [4] *** 5.75 km (12:36 / km)
spiked:8/16c slept:7.0

WRE Middle at Ansonia Nature Park

My struggles this spring continue. Details in the leg comments. Biggest error was C12, where I now realize I was still running on the bearing set for C11.

Running warm up/down 14:00 [2] 1.4 mi (10:00 / mi)

Jogged to the start (600m) with Z ahead of time, then nate, Z and I took the "shortcut" back to the parking lot, using the model map (none of us with a compass). That took longer than expected, so Z had to hustle back to the start to make his time.

Minimal jogging afterwards.

Note
slept:5.25 (rest day)

No running for me today. Instead, I was an awful parent.

We had a meet against Canandaigua, and almost everyone ran the mile (21 entrants for Schroeder - the official asked if we wanted to run two sections). We only had 16 in the 800.

I put together 5 relays for the 4x800. The top two relays won by about a lap, and finished less than 2 seconds apart. The other three relays finished within 5 seconds, with the final order being opposite of the order after the third leg. Lots of fun!

Elliptical 21:30 [3] 2.0 mi (10:45 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:160.5lbs

So, I was going to take the day off, after running longer than planned yesterday, and working almost 12 hours (and not having lunch); however, a government employee was intruding in my kitchen when I got home, so I got the hell out of there.

I didn't really feel like running, so it was off to the Y, where I first jumped on the elliptical and pressed the performance button. That triggered the "fitness test" which started out at 10/1, and gradually built up. By 15 minutes, it was up to 10/14 and was pretty challenging. When it got up to 10/20, it was a major struggle and I had to eventually call it quits.

The weight is unfair, since it was after the workout, but it was nice to see it 6.5 lbs less than last Thursday or so.

Biking 25:00 [2] 6.75 mi (3:42 / mi)

Next up was some biking. I did the Auto Pilot program and only averaged 89rpm. My HR seemed to stay below 110, which was very strange, given the perceived effort and the amount of sweat on my shirt.

Erging 17:27 [3] 4.0 km (4:22 / km)

Finally, in honor of Chelsea making it into MIT's second boat (a 4) for Nationals, I jumped on the erg. I was a little lacking in energy, and my back was a bit sore from the bike, so I did 4K as follows:
1K @ 26 (2:15.2 pace)
1K @ 28 (2:09.6)
1K @ 26 (2:16.0)
1K @ 30 (2:02.8)

The downside of Chelsea making it to nationals is that she doesn't get to come home, or at least not for long, between finals and her summer job at Mass General. But I didn't realize that her team is quite respectable - their first boat is ranked 7th in the country, according to the latest poll.
