Note

So, Zach had a tryout for JV indoor track today. He ran 6:25 for a mile, on the lame indoor track at the Thomas field house (13 laps to the mile), which was the fastest time for the 7th/8th grade tryout. He is forced to do this because Webster is not fielding a modified track team this year (it's been combined with varsity the last few years and the coaches won't do that again without a separate modified coach.

On a separate note, Nate decided to run 7 with the big boys from Thomas, the day after Raid the Hammer. I guess I didn't push him hard enough yesterday.

Raid the Hammer with Nate and Dan. I slowed them down significantly, but we still managed to grab 8th overall and 5th in the male category, just behind GTA.

With the big crowd at the start, and a tunnel nearby (had to go south first), I told Nate and Dan we'd want to get out quick, and that they did. I think they would have been first to the tunnel if they didn't have to wait for me, but as it was we were about the 3rd team through. Our plan was ABD, but the only good way to leave B was straight towards C. I tried to climb over the spur, but by then Nate could see the flag, so I had to hustle back down. Then it was just try to stay close.

For the northern loop, we planned and executed CAB. We left the trail aimed too far left of C and had to correct from the two gullies. I was already getting a bit winded and slowed them substantially going to A. Leaving B was a nightmare. I was flailing, since the boys were ahead and Eugene's team was just behind. At one point I didn't see some brown thorns and tore some flesh, as documented in the fine photos at the RTH site (I think that was after I had cleaned it up near C1).

We made decent time over to C1, although we were slow getting in and out of the circle, due to the slippery mud. etc. We stayed low going to C2, contouring pretty nicely, but started to panic and wound up climbing just about to the trail.

The guys took off towards C3, and it was all I could do to stay within 50m. They flew by Wil Smith's team and I caught them on the road going to C3. We paused a bit when we saw C3, trying to determine how to get down to it, since the trail went away from it, but then we realized there was a switchback. We had just passed another team as well, so when Nate and Dan let me lead the next segment, I pushed pretty hard thru the woods. Nate couldn't read english while running, so he had to stop to verify the route to C4, but he made up the ground on me quite quickly. I'm glad most of the town route was downhill!

Nate had chosen 5B and 7B before we started, so that's what we did, albeit with a couple of problems. Not being really ready for a 1:15 map, we crossed at the creek bend before the building instead of after it, and ran up the reentrant quite a ways before Nate figured out we were supposed to be on a spur. We recovered nicely and took the main trail over to C6, for a quick break. Back on the trail, and me with no metric measurements on my compass,

What an idiot - Saturday night as I tried to herd Nate and Zach to the car, I somehow left my Camelbak in the house. So, when I got up early in EA on Sunday AM, I had no Camelbak, no whistle, no compass, no blanket, no pen, no med kit. Patty helped me scrounge stuff up quickly, but the compass was not particularly useful. I thought I had lost it just two minutes before the start, but it turns out that I had tossed my hat on my head, with the compass still inside. Next time we pack extra early.

so I had no idea how far to go. We were warned that the rough open near Cs 7 was really rough, but I didn't know that could mean thick trees that seemed to be 10-15 feet tall, so we were on our way to going too far when I saw an unmapped trail to the right and told Nate to stop. We looked at the contours for a bit and Nate decided we had gone too far, if we ignored the vegetation. We took the trail down and Nate could see the flag after pushing thru to the next trail north. Going to C8, we found a decent place to climb after crossing the stream, went close enough to the big building to be sure where we were, then climbed up to the top of the spur and ran down to the bag. We stayed mostly on the road to C9, skipping the shortcut, since the fields didn't seem clean enough, based on the speed we saw some people going. This meant another painful stretch for me as I tried to keep up. We left the road a little on the late side, after it had started downhill just a bit.

We aimed off to the left of C10, so that we would know to go right when we hit the trail, but none of us were prepared to write, so we lost some time getting the code. In hindsight, I should have taken off while they fumbled at the post, since I was 4 minutes behind them at 11, after collecting 10A. The going to 10A was tough, so I lost some time early, but the uphill at the end of the leg, while it made me walk, allowed me to read the map quite well. I took the trail out of 10A, then flew down the first reentrant to the road, passing a whole bunch of timid 10Kers(?). They were amazed that I didn't fall, and so was I, until I was safely at the bottom, almost to the road, and failed to get my trailing foot over a small downed log and face-planted. Nate and Dan did B together, then I think Dan did C and Nate did D.

Nate told me C12 was mostly trails, so I didn't look much at the map, just tried to stay close. We left towards the road, but the pines were dark and thick enough to chase us south, so we just took the trail, continuing on the lesser trail until it T'd. Not realizing how short the bushwhack would have been, we cruised out to the road and back in the next trail. We aimed for the marsh and Nate got ahead, so by the time I came over the big spur at the edge of the circle, he was basically at the correct flag. Then just a nice climb to the common control.

Nate is not a fan of Line-O, but I made him take the map anyway, thinking he could stop and ponder continuously while I caught up. In hindsight, we moved much too cautiously thru the terrain, trying to stay too precisely on the line. After we found the first flag early, I was certain the next flag would be on the last hilltop (if it wasn't, then it wasn't clear to me whether people would have to continue to follow the line), but we still did not move quickly. I used the map briefly in this section, and had it when we got to the second line-O flag, but since I was assuming Nate would punch (he had punched all of the controls when we were together) - what is that they say about assuming? I didn't ask Nate whether he had punched until we were back down to the trail, and he said, "uh, you had the map". Damn! I was distracted while on the hilltop (2 other teams were there), and had never considered punching. Nate ran thru the swamp and back up the hill to punch, and the the line was the best way onto C15. And another big climb to the common control (now called 16).

Off to C17 - it seemed clear to us that we wanted to go right to get around the first big stuff, so that's what we did. We climbed over the spur at the start of the second big stuff and went a little farther before we did some hesitating - since we did a fair amount of walking in this stretch, we thought we had gone far enough when we still had one more reentrant to go. For C18, we were going slow enough that we were able to go pretty straight until we went around the last hill and crossed the stream just about at the reentrant. On the way to C19 we did some jogging, as we had the hill to our right to stop us from missing the bag.

I don't really remember C20, perhaps Nate will be able to remind me.

We went towards C21 on a rough bearing, trying to keep moving, but not much left in my legs and Nate and Dan were following me for a change. Climbed a little too early and saw the fence (presumably the OB line) before it turned south. Used it as a handrail, but was enough out of it that I didn't notice where it turned, I just noticed that parallel to it was now south, not east. Angled for the parking lot and in, with Nate now taking off, so he punched the last control, waited for me for a few seconds, then hustled in, and had to wait again before punching the finish.

If Nate is available for this next year, I'll have to find a better team for him - not including me. I'm hoping he will not be available for it next year, though, since it's likely to be the day after the state XC meet again.

Running 57:30 [3] 7.7 mi (7:28 / mi)
slept:6.5

GTA with the debut of the new location out on Stone Rd in Pittsford. The location is not as convenient as Brighton (at least for me) but it looks like there are some good options for running out that way. I love the way Pittsford has little trail easements that connect the various cul-de-sacs. I was always meaning to bring that to the attention of the Penfield Town Board, but never have taken the initiative.

It was still dark when we started at the usual 6am, so there were a couple of tumbles on the trails. 10 of us were out (Erik, Scott, Frank, JV, DV, Vinny, Lawrence, G2, and Mark), plus 2 aux members did their thing.

The route was something like this. Although I added 0.15 miles on the Sutherland loop, per the splits. And I may have made a small error on a couple of the transitions.

Volleyball 30:00 [1]

I think I may have had a couple of drops of sweat appear, but not much more - the other team was terrible, so not many long rallies.

It was back into the pool after a LONG layoff. My arms were tired after about three pulls. I could tell my stroke got pretty sloppy as my arms tried to find an easy way thru the water, rather than an efficient way to pull. A few weeks of 2-3 x per week and I should be back to some level of comfort.

Running 39:56 [2] 4.63 mi (8:38 / mi)

Dropped Z off for his off-ice training at the Webster Community Center, and went out for an easy run around the village of Webster. Went past Cooleen's house and K-Dawg's house (saw his dad) on this route. Also, went past the apartment house that was engulfed in flames a couple of weeks ago. It still has some nice holes in the roof and much of the front is open.

Running 50:10 [3] 6.84 mi (7:20 / mi)
rhr:40 slept:5.25

Ran with a group at lunch time from Xerox Square (actually, I started at the Y). Scott arranged to meet up with Gabber, who brought Leo, and he saw Mike, along with Venkat(?) and another guy in the locker room, so it was a decent sized group. Ran the river loop to Elmwood, backwards, like this.

Scott and Leo took off a bit, but Scott dropped Leo, then Leo turned his ankle, so Gabber stayed with him, and the rest of us continued on. Scott waited at the ped bridge, then couldn't hang on while we continued the same pedestrian 7:20 pace that we had been running. I guess Greg and the other Kodakers took too much out of him yesterday. Mike is currently a 17-minute 5K guy, so he just cruised along while Venkat struggled a bit and I was in between.
