Set out at 4:27am after Rachael had a rapid run on leg 5.
Was cautious to #1 after the horror stories I had heard around the arena. My plan was to be strict on a bearing, skirt round the south of the large hill, across the marshes, through some green and over a rocky bit into the control. My Orienteering was sufficiently good that along with some elephant tracks I was able to get it straight on. After that I started to pick it up a bit, hit #2 and #3 well. I was a bit too far south on #4 and probably lost about 30s. #5, #6, #7, #8 and #9 I was in a good rhythm and it was going rather well, only a short wobble on #6. Went around the paths to #10 but fluffed up the control and ended up too far north, +2mins. 11 was okay, and 12 started well.
Was going slowly up the hill half way to #12 when I stood on the worlds most pathetic looking twig. Apparently they build them tough in Finland. This measly twig went straight through the solid rubber soul on my Orocs, through the insole and only stopped at my foot. Luckily I was going sufficiently slowly that I could lift my foot before any damage was done, but it was mighty close to 'doing a GG'. Now Inov8, it's all very well and good building a 280g shoe. Orocs are good, grippy and comfy, with no Inov8 heel issues, HOWEVER the primary function of a shoe is to protect your foot. What the hell is the point of building a shoe who's sole can be punctured by a twig of roughly 5mm diameter which had a blunt end?! Is this the start of Inov8 doing 'style over substance'? Anywho, I tried to pull the twig out, but couldn't so I had to take off my shoe and try again, still couldn't! In the end I ended up snapping the twig at either side of the shoe and putting a piece of bark on top of it inside the shoe to protect me. In the end I was stationary for about 4mins 30, according to the GPS. Interesting that GG wasn't a flook, its looking like Inov8 have an inherent design flaw in the their light weight o shoes!
After all of this shenanigans, I then ballsed up the control through not really focussing, meaning I was about 6 mins slower then I could of been on this leg. Got back into it nicely for #13,#14. Went round the paths to #15, hit #16, #17, #18 well and could then enjoy some fast running over to #19. Ended up on a crag too far north on #19, losing about 45-60 secs. #20, #21 and #22 were uneventful, and just starting to get a bit tiring. However the sprint was still there and I managed to cruise down the run in 61st fastest out of 1454! Boom! :P
All in all really enjoyed it, apart from the whole twig incident. Handed over to James who bought us up further to 311th :) Good fun!
Bettered last year by bringing us up 22 places and fell just outside the top 20% on my leg coming in 346th.
