Orienteering race 1:24:45 [5] 5.9 km (14:22 / km)

West Point Long. Not quite as bad as yesterday, so I suppose that's good? Dropped too low contouring along the hill to #1, but #2 was ok. #3 was pretty bad- somehow my compass bearing went totally wrong, and I ended up way southeast instead of southwest. Not really sure how this happened, because I thought I was being pretty careful, but I should've been lining more things up with the map instead of just using compass I guess. Took a little while to relocate from that one. #4 was fine. #5 I had another really bad compass error, again ending up way too much to the left (a trend? maybe). I ended up back in the region where #3 was, and pretty quickly realized what I had done wrong- a waste of distance more than anything else. The rest of the other controls were actually ok, although for #8 I did a trail run and it took a few minutes to find the trail. All in all, couldn't say this weekend was the most successful ever... but still fun, and hopefully l learned a few things from the mistakes at least.

Orienteering race 51:17 [5] 3.5 km (14:39 / km)

West Point Middle Distance. Not a great race, especially the first half. Looking back on it, my main problem was that I kept mistaking one feature for another- for example, #2 I attacked off the wrong rocky hilltop. On #3 (definitely my worst control) there was a control on a dot knoll about 100m north of where the Green control was- I was so stubborn and convinced that I was at the right control that I must've gone around that area for 5min before I decided to drift south and then I saw it. Other stupid mistake was following the east side of a pond instead of the south side of the pond going to #5. I can't even explain this- I must've lost contact with the map. I don't know. Second half of the race was better... Overall just much more technical orienteering than I've done in a few months.

Orienteering race 27:22 [5] 2.1 mi (13:02 / mi)

West Point Sprint... Argh this was even worse than the middle distance, a little painful to write about. I was overrunning the controls in the beginning, most notably on #5 (I lost contact with the map around here too, so that didn't help). Then I literally skipped #8, which I realized once I had gotten to #10, so I had to run back down the hill to #8, punch that, then repunch #9 and #10. Even the end wasn't good, I ran to the wrong building... so messy.
