orienteering (brown) 1:26:16 [2]

My stomach has been giving me trouble off and on for a couple days now- nothing serious, but enough that I haven't been hungry, and subsequently my energy levels have been quite low. Anyway, coupled with the heat, I figured I'd just go for a fairly short course and try to enjoy it, rather than suffering through green or red. Things weren't going well right off the bat, just wasn't really mentally engaged on the way to 2 or 3, causing me to overrun my attackpoint on 2, then bite off on the wrong re-entrant to 3. Fortuitously, this meant that I was attacking 3 from a different direction than planned, and I ran into a young NJROTC student having a rough day as well. He was on brown, having only completed a white and yellow course previously, and he didn't have a compass, so I offered a couple options, either he could accompany me to 4, and we'd make a determination there if he wanted to continue, or he could start heading back. He opted to continue, and as we went, we talked a little about the map scale and how to use the contours to stay oriented without a compass. At 4, he informed me that he was going to sprint ahead, and he took off. I saw him again at 5, 6, and 7, when I stopped to help another family that was having some issues with scale/map interpretation. Didn't see my young friend again until I was on my way to 11 (although I heard another orienteer talking to him behind me on 8 or 9), and he said he needed some help getting back to the start quickly, as the rest of his unit was waiting on him. I sent him off in the right direction, and didn't realize until I got to the download that he'd nearly finished the whole course. I have to say I was pretty impressed with his tenacity- just a freshman, running his 3rd ever orienteering course, on a map with a lot of vague areas and no compass in nearly 90 degree heat, and the only reason he didn't finish was because he got a call that he had to come back to the start ASAP. I made a point to talk to his OIC before they left to let him know that I thought he'd done a great job, and to encourage him to keep coming out (even if he sticks to yellow or orange for the rest of the season).

strength/core 20:00 [1]

Morning PT. Did some sit-ups and push-ups in preparation for the PRT, then some other light strength/flexibility exercises. Skipped both running and swimming, since my sinuses felt like they weighed an extra 15-20 pounds.
