Orienteering race (Indian Creek) 1:08:49 [3] *** 4.5 km (15:18 / km)
25c shoes: Vavrys - studded rubber cleats

I was so happy to see the sun come out. The blue skies and sun-rays make such difference in the way I approach an event. The temperature was almost irrelevant. The wind may have been a factor, but it did not penetrate the wooded mass. I may have been over dressed. But I remained comfortable during the run; first removing the cap, then the rolling the sleeves.

Indian Creek is a move back to OCIN roots. The earliest date I see on the map says 1993. But my memory says we were there earlier. Indian Creek was an annual event in the 90's. I missed the last few events before Butler Parks closed the park due to budget constraints. It has been quite sometime since I last O'd there. I have memories of the map. I thought I might recognize some routes. But there have been many changes in 8 or so years. And I have forgotten the rest.

The event was fun. I have taken up training; just two weeks now. But it makes all the difference. Although I jog slowly and walk up the hills, I am aware of improvement. The course was challenging. The terrain and vegetation present physical challenges. I love this thing we call O.

I rushed a quick run in between work and a Parish Council meeting. It was raining. I feared being drenched and cold. With my cap pulled tightly over my glasses I ruled my little world. The weather was no more than a strong drizzle. With a thick layer of wicking material as a top, I stayed warm and dry. Time being a factor I kept a strong pace. A shower, reheated meal, and quick trip to the church were still in store. I balanced the effort with the risk of injury. Although slow, I set a new 2012 4 mile record.

I got home at 4:40. As I walked into the family room, Dottie announced that Mike was on the phone. He was interested in running; would run with me tonight if I could wait 45 minutes or so. I was unsure if I wanted to go out at all. I was tired, and it seemed a bit chilly. I told him that if I went out it would be now.

I pulled my running clothes from Monday out of the washer and tossed them into the dryer. I sat down and fell into a semi-state of sleep.

At 5:56 Steve Smith called. He was going out to run and asked me if I was interested. I could not help but feel compelled to get up, get dressed, and get out and run. I grabbed my clothes from the dryer. They were so cozy warm. I drove down the street and picked up Steve. We ran the 4 mile route from the Riverside Natural Areas. His pace quickened mine over yesterdays. I feel good. Thank God for friends.

I ramped it up to 4 miles tonight. I know that it seems silly. But that's where I'm at. I don't even know if I can do another 4 tomorrow. We shall see.
