Orienteering race 49:45 [4] 4.0 mi (12:26 / mi)
(injured)

South Island Middle Distance Champs, West Bay, Rotoiti.
M45, 4.0km.
Very tricky green forest with clearings. Visibility low and care rather than haste was the name of the game, particularly for the controls in the green. I 'only' lost about 8-9 mins, which was good today and enough to win M45, beating A C-W by a couple of mins.
Took Voltaran, but achilles sore after a few minutes. Still able to hobble round as didn't need to run quickly.

(injured) (rest day)

Sat out the South Island Champs sprint race. Good decision as it turned out to be a burn up around a park and golf course (with people playing at the same time!).

Cycling 1:00:00 [2] 10.0 mi (6:00 / mi)
(injured)

Another 'after work' mountain bike ride on the Port Hills with A C-W. More great single-track and a pint of real ale to finish with!

Road bike 2:30:00 [2] 50.0 km (3:00 / km) +1000m 2:44 / km
(injured)

Out over the Port Hills with Ian Harrison. Lyttleton Harbour and back over the climb affectionately known as 'The Bastard'; 30 mins steady uphill (about 360m climb). Very hot again (30+ degrees). Next week I'm in for a shock...
Achilles settling down a bit, but can tell it'll be sore very soon after trying to run. Probably won't bother with the sprint this w/e, so at least I can do the middle. Physio booked for next week.

Cycling 1:00:00 [2] 10.0 mi (6:00 / mi)

Mountain bike ride with A C-W up the Port Hills around Christchurch after work (for him). Amazing single track so close to the city and great views!

Orienteering race 25:00 [4] 3.0 mi (8:20 / mi)
(injured)

Fun Ultrasprint race on the shores of Lake Taupo.
Jean had entered me and Al for Vet Men (as same course as Open) not realising it was M50+ so have gone from one extreme to the other!
Managed to beat A C-W over the 3 qualifying races, but let him have the Final. Achilles surprisingly not too bad.
11 PM

Orienteering race 52:12 [4] 4.0 mi (13:03 / mi)
(injured)

Katoa Po, Kaiapo Faultline, near Taupo.
This is the NZ equivalent of Jukola, but even smaller than the Harvester.
I was running leg 5 for a Cory-Wright/UK team. I struggled with the navigation in the dark; the deep re-entrants didn't appear to be mapped with contours but just shown as ditches. Also my achilles got very sore despite taking Voltaran. Luckily I was only racing women, so hung on to 2nd place! 4.7km in 52 mins, should have been about 40 mins.
A C-W on last leg had an impossible task against the NZ elite and we eventually finished 4th.

Orienteering race 20:55 [4] 2.5 mi (8:22 / mi)
(injured)

Sprint the Bay race 5, The Slip. 2.7km, 210m climb! Hot again.
Mass start race on landslip area similar to Bretton Clough (but slightly less complicated). I was starting with a group including all those who'd already misspunched, inc some rather good world cup runners.
Off the pace from the start and started making silly mistakes once I was on my own.
Missed stage 6 to give my achilles a break and sat at the last control with a cold beer instead.
Note to self: I'm NOT elite anymore; enter my own age class next time!

Orienteering race 20:20 [4] 3.0 mi (6:47 / mi)
(injured)

Sprint the Bay, race 3, Kaiwaka.
The most fun race of the series. In a dry riverbed with areas of gorse and willow trees. Thought I'd done OK until Bill beat me by 2 mins!
Achilles getting worse still, so decided not to bother with race 4 which was around the streets of Napier.

Orienteering race 23:57 [4] 3.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
(injured)

Sprint the Bay, Race 1, Woodford.
For some reason I was entered on the Elite. I was far from elite standard and only managed 6 controls before contriving to miss one out, thereby disqualifying myself from the 6 race series!
Complex school buildings with many changes in level, along with fields and sports grounds. Miles off the pace anyway. Voltaran effect starting to wear off.
7 PM

Orienteering race 22:43 [4] 3.0 mi (7:34 / mi)
(injured)

Race 2, Splash Planet.
Fun novelty event around a water theme park. Got all the controls but struggled with finding decent routes through the uncrossable fence and river surrounding the park.
