Running race 18:23 [5] 5.0 km (3:41 / km)

10th annual Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary Run for the Animals - 3rd overall on a new course with slightly less climb than in previous years, 2nd male on Team PCRM, replicating my result the last time I ran the race two years ago, including my result counting towards PCRM retaining the Pigasus trophy. Didn't think that last was necessarily going to happen, especially in the early going, but the youngster who was third on the team two years ago went out too fast this year, leading for the first ~half and then fading. Not badly enough that his time wouldn't have sufficed to secure the animal welfare charity team win - HSUS seems, as far as I can tell, to have given up trying to be competitive. Faster than two years ago but with the course change it's hard to decide where that means I stand other than in much less good shape than I was in 2007 when I won the race. Need to go find myself a flat 5K or two during the summer.

Orienteering race 1:11:23 [3] 9.2 km (7:46 / km)

QOC Mason Neck Blue - it's a good thing it's delayed onset muscle soreness rather than immediate onset muscle soreness because I can't seem to do a running race on pavement the last few years without paying a hefty price over the next two or three days but I was fine to run around Mason Neck for 9K not overly hard a few hours after the 5K in the morning. Sloppily failed to hit the gap between the two large green areas on the third leg and wasted time punching through the SW one. Also poor rough compass leaving 13 and then bashed my left knee on some deadfall to distract myself and compound the error.

Is Mason Neck a little less runnable than it used to be? Leaving aside my excursion through mapped green between 2 and 3, it felt to me as though the runnability was slightly lower than it was in July a couple of years ago. I hope I was imagining things or it was a temporary consequence of weather-induced deadfall since then rather than a continuing trend.
