Note

Restful day - Dan and I slept in, took in both the movies the National Gallery screened in the afternoon, then went out for dinner (Burmese). Did a tiny bit of yoga/stretching before bedtime in the evening.

Cycling 37:00 [3]

Home from the airport in the afternoon.

Running 1:03:00 [1]

Jogging in Rock Creek Park with Dan in the evening. Will have to start doing these earlier again - was getting dim under the canopy by the end of the run.

Saturday Aug 24, 2013 #

Running 1:01:00 [1]

Morning jog in RCP with Dan.

Cycling 35:00 [3]

Home to National Airport to pick up rental car.

Orienteering 1:29:31 [4]

Ted's Squirrel whatever it was event - score-O Pasi-style, visited 24 of 29 points. Likely would have cleaned the course if not for silly mental error of skipping the control in the commercial area on the north edge of the map my first time passing by that part of the map and having to backtrack a kilometer to get it when I realised what I'd done. Would have been optimal to just keep going and settle for 28 of 29 but at that point it still seemed plausible that I might clean the course despite the extra distance to run.

Cycling 54:00 [3]

Commute and non-intense homeward cycling.

Cycling 19:08 [5] 9.07 km (2:07 / km) +69m 2:02 / km

CCT time trial. Not hot but back to typical DC summer humidity levels. That combination had sweat in my eyes just beginning to be a problem the last minute or so of the ride so tolerable.

Sunday Aug 18, 2013 #

Cycling 2:08:00 [3]

Miscellaneous cycling getting to and from Lake Frank and the National Gallery.

Friday Aug 16, 2013 #

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Commute.

Thursday Aug 15, 2013 #

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

The day's not so intense cycling to work then to the CCT and from PCRM home.

Cycling 18:47 [5] 9.07 km (2:04 / km) +69m 2:00 / km

CCT time trial in cool weather again, I think a little cooler than Sunday, which I'll give most of the credit for the slight improvement in my best time for the course. Plus some more credit since I had both my panniers today so a little bit more wind resistance to contend with plus a little more traffic on the path.

Will be curious to see how well this translates into fitness for 5Ks and orienteering sprints. I'm quite certain my body wouldn't currently tolerate doing two running workouts a week of intensity and duration equivalent to this. Will I find myself with lots of aerobic capacity come October or so but not quite able to apply all of it to running?

Wednesday Aug 14, 2013 #

Cycling 1:05:00 [3]

Work commute plus dropping in on the aquatic center on the way home.

Deep Water Running 1:05:00 [2]

Swimming 50:00 [2]

Flutterkicking.

Tuesday Aug 13, 2013 #

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Commute.

Form exercises 27:00 [4]

Got home ~7:30 and managed to sneak in some silly walks and uphill bounding before the rain soaked the grass and/or darkness fell.

Monday Aug 12, 2013 #

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Commute.

Sunday Aug 11, 2013 #

Cycling 50:00 [2]

Non-intense cycling getting downtown for some art gallerying, including Japanese illustrated books at the Sackler, Nam June Paik at the American Art Museum, Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance performing at the NGA and then a silent film from a French/Russian exile production company starring Ivan Mosjoukine, and then indirectly home.

Cycling 18:53 [5] 9.06 km (2:05 / km) +69m 2:00 / km

CCT time trial. Didn't feel awesome at the beginning (nor terrible) so the faster time than other recent attempts is gratifying, even if largely due to tolerable weather conditions, relatively light trail traffic and corrective action after deciding my tires were slightly underinflated as I was leaving the American Art Gallery. Passed another cyclist about 2km into the ride who then drafted off me until he passed me again a few hundred meters before my finish line.

Note

DCRRC Cross Country 3 Miler?

Orienteering 2:30:00 [1] 11.4 km (13:09 / km)

Vetted locations for/hung an advanced course at Oregon Ridge for training purposes using my half-size training controls. Have previously placed controls on behalf of an absent course designer but somehow, presumably due to his standards, failed to thereby appreciate the degree to which dot knolls are overmapped. I don't really mind a distinct bump in the terrain that doesn't meet ISOM standards for height being mapped but there are quite a few not very distinct at all bumps mapped, at least two mapped that I meant to use as a control feature but couldn't find at all, and strangely one control feature mapped as a cup depression that turned out to be a very low rockpile (presumably an error of field note interpretation during the OCAD drafting).

Note

MCRRC Going Green Track Meet?

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Commute.

Thursday Aug 8, 2013 #

Cycling 55:00 [2]

Similar downtown to CCT to upper NW and home cycling to Sunday. Main difference is going from work through West Potomac Park along the waterfront.

Cycling 20:13 [5] 9.06 km (2:14 / km) +69m 2:09 / km

Time trial on little peopled CCT under a not very immediate threat of thunderstorms. Possibly most humid of any time I've done this - first time sweat getting in my eyes for the last few kms has been a truly serious problem.

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Cycling 50:00 [2]

Not so intense cycling getting to the National Gallery again and the Sackler for some illustrated Japanese books that will no longer be on display after next weekend, then home after some grocery shopping in upper NW.

Cycling 20:01 [5] 9.06 km (2:13 / km) +69m 2:08 / km

Time trial on the CCT. Not very heavily laden but somewhat obstructed by the fair weather cyclists and pedestrians being out in comparatively great force.

Running 1:02:00 [1]

Same route with Dan as yesterday.

Saturday Aug 3, 2013 #

Cycling 40:00 [3]

Round trip to the National Gallery for documentary about the post-Diaghilev Ballets Russes.

Running 1:02:00 [1]

Jogging in Rock Creek Park with Dan. Blessedly cool after the light rain late in the afternoon.

Friday Aug 2, 2013 #

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Cycling commute

Thursday Aug 1, 2013 #

Cycling 39:00 [3]

Cycling to work then from work to the southeast end of the CCT.

Cycling 20:22 [5] 8.98 km (2:16 / km) +69m 2:11 / km

Time trial on the CCT en route to PCRM.

Cycling 30:00 [2]

Riding from the CCT to PCRM and then homewards with a stop at Whole Foods to restock with yogurt for Dan, on which they're surprisingly price competitive.
