Cycling 50:00 [3]

Work commute. Tried taking Sherman Ave south to Florida then 9th St NW all the way to Pennsylvania on the way in this morning. After waiting for the first light on Sherman, the light timing gave me a non-stop ride to at least a couple of blocks past Florida and 9th with traffic fairly light and non-combative. Less shady than smaller streets but otherwise rather nice until truly downtown, which may be unavoidably a pain on any roue that crosses Pennsylvania east of 15th St.

Cycling 25:00 [3]

Came south largely using 11th St NW this morning. Less of a struggle though no faster, at least not significantly. Though I think finding a route that feels like less of a fight dominates speed as a measure of overall route desirability for the morning commute.

Cycling 26:00 [2]

Less intense parts of ride from new workplace to PCRM, largely along the Capital Crescent Trail, though this was the parts before and after that.

Cycling 20:00 [4]

Non-stop section of ride on CCT at high intensity - had an elliptical biker drafting me for the first bit then he passed me before easing off a few minutes later. Hadn't ever seen one of them go that fast before - the pedaling or whatever the correct term is makes a distinctive, somewhat alarming when you don't initially realise what is coming up behind you noise. Level 5 intensity might be justified - will have to deploy HRM sometime when I do this again and see.

Cycling 18:00 [3]

Cycling home from PCRM.

100th anniversary of the premiere of Le Sacre du Printemps

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Round trip commute to the new office on Virginia Ave SW. Tried my usual non rush hour route starting south on 16th St NW this time. Pretty unpleasant, especially in the beginning threading my way through three lanes of stop and go traffic heading south. Will try some routes downtown on smaller streets further east over the next while to see what's most pleasant.

Orienteering race 5:51:16 [2]

Hickory Hop Mini-Rogaine - wow that's a lot of green - good thing it still corresponds quite well to the few years old map. Made a really silly excursion through a lot of green on the way to my first control, getting behind a lot of people, and was very inefficient for no good reason on my third and fourth controls but steadied down thereafter and had few technical problems worse than minor failures to spike controls once inside the circle. Cleaned Map A in 3:15 and decided to hold out for a possible if unlikely cleaning of Map B by going all the way out to the two westernmost controls. Ended up having to give up on visiting three controls in the eastern half of the map to get in with just under four minutes to spare (I subtracted five minutes from my time for logging purposes to allow for time off my feet during the map exchange/refueling stop).

Running race 18:23 [5] 5.0 km (3:41 / km)

10th annual Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary Run for the Animals - 3rd overall on a new course with slightly less climb than in previous years, 2nd male on Team PCRM, replicating my result the last time I ran the race two years ago, including my result counting towards PCRM retaining the Pigasus trophy. Didn't think that last was necessarily going to happen, especially in the early going, but the youngster who was third on the team two years ago went out too fast this year, leading for the first ~half and then fading. Not badly enough that his time wouldn't have sufficed to secure the animal welfare charity team win - HSUS seems, as far as I can tell, to have given up trying to be competitive. Faster than two years ago but with the course change it's hard to decide where that means I stand other than in much less good shape than I was in 2007 when I won the race. Need to go find myself a flat 5K or two during the summer.

Orienteering race 1:11:23 [3] 9.2 km (7:46 / km)

QOC Mason Neck Blue - it's a good thing it's delayed onset muscle soreness rather than immediate onset muscle soreness because I can't seem to do a running race on pavement the last few years without paying a hefty price over the next two or three days but I was fine to run around Mason Neck for 9K not overly hard a few hours after the 5K in the morning. Sloppily failed to hit the gap between the two large green areas on the third leg and wasted time punching through the SW one. Also poor rough compass leaving 13 and then bashed my left knee on some deadfall to distract myself and compound the error.

Is Mason Neck a little less runnable than it used to be? Leaving aside my excursion through mapped green between 2 and 3, it felt to me as though the runnability was slightly lower than it was in July a couple of years ago. I hope I was imagining things or it was a temporary consequence of weather-induced deadfall since then rather than a continuing trend.
