Event: QOC Manassas

Orienteering race 58:22 [4] 9.4 km (6:13 / km)

QOC Manassas Red - runner's course. Joined a lot of people in fumbling the first control a bit in the tall grass, otherwise pretty clean at speed and apparently a bit luckier than Ken when it came to encountering serious vegetation/deadfall not indicated on the map - I certainly didn't hit anything all that bad on the way to 5, nor do I see on the map where he would have. Either fading a bit at the end or slowed down a bit by having jammed my right leg when I was brought to a sudden stop by a strand of greenbriar on the way through the slightly large than mapped area of deadfall heading to 15.

Cycling 25:00 [3]

Up to Bethesda to pick up a rental car for the weekend.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1]

Terrain scouting, unfortunately discovering that the north side of a park with quite a nice south side is almost unspeakably nasty, setting aside one large wooded ridge which is half to two thirds nice, half to one third mildly unpleasant. Will have to ponder whether the nice piece of southern terrain is enough to accommodate anything more than a summer series event. I have in my life done a middle distance WRE with a map exchange which was quite good so I won't write off a small piece of lovely terrain without at least thinking what a bit of creative course setting could accomplish.
