Run! Geek! Run! 8K?

Running 30:42 [4] 8.0 km (3:50 / km)
(injured)

Run! Geek! Run! 8K - 6th overall, having fallen from 2nd after my left hamstring proved to only be good for about 4 miles of moderately fast running. A setback, obviously, and I would have skipped that race if not for the QOC team aspect. Still, this convinced me that I only damaged the muscle without screwing up any tendons or ligaments around the knee, so I'm quite happy. Still second in my age group. QOC team swept all before it as all five members also came 1st or 2nd in their classes.

More front crawl, breast stroke and some backstroke. Earphones stopped working in one ear midway through the workout and failed completely in the last couple of minutes of swimming - will probably have to buy a new pair.

Festival for World Peace 5K? Sadly, not a chance after the muscle pull last weekend. It might be fine but I'm not about to apply the acid test so soon.

Cycling to work. Home by way of the aquatic center.

Swimming 22:00 [3]
(injured)

Confirmed the hamstring doesn't interfere with swimming. Not that it isn't feeling progressively better but I don't want to challenge it and get set back.

Tuesday Oct 20, 2009 #

Cycling to work and back, including shopping and dropping in to the Takoma branch library on the way home.

Cycling home from work, confirming my impression that my hamstring would be okay with at least one form of exercise.

Sunday Oct 18, 2009 #

Orienteering race 20:00 [3]
(injured)

Quebec Champs long - abandoned on the way to the fifth control when I suffered what appears to be a Grade 1 hamstring pull. Obviously not something I anticipated despite it not feeling 100% at the start despite the night's rest. At least resisted any urge compound my foolishness by trying to continue, even at a walk, once it gave an unmistakable signal to desist.

Saturday Oct 17, 2009 #

Orienteering race 36:16 [4]

Quebec Champs Middle - somewhat sloppy, should have been a couple of minutes faster.

Orienteering race 14:12 [5] 2.7 km (5:16 / km) +40m 4:54 / km

Quebec Champs sprint - route choice aside, fun but not very difficult sprint in which the worst thing I did technically was overrun a control hung on a distinct tree late in the course (of course, that alone was worth at least one placing). Having gone to school on the campus in question, albeit a long time ago, no doubt made things a little bit easier when it came to avoiding traps. Physically, something went wrong in my left hamstring as I exited the second last control. Not enough to stop me running but, in hindsight, something I should have taken more seriously.

Sunday Oct 11, 2009 #

Orienteering race 3:16:13 [3] 26.1 km (7:31 / km)

Highlander - longer writeup in a bit.

Saturday Oct 10, 2009 #

Orienteering 40:00 [4] 5.2 km (7:42 / km)

Relay exercise on Pole Brook mountain. Comedy of errors stuff, including trying to skip the first two controls on the third loop and not noticing until I'd run about 500m towards the last control of the loop. It could only go up from there.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1] ****

Round trip from parking out to pick up the controls and stands from the 2003 US Team Trials middle distance race. Did the course in order, very slowly due to the accumulating burden of stands. Loved the course even at very low speed (though I don't think it was quite difficult enough to be hard at less than competition speed) and think it was a useful reminder of what must be done to spike controls in Harriman.

Orienteering 36:23 [4] 4.7 km (7:44 / km) +135m 6:46 / km

WOC93 men's short final rerun - two hours of control pickup was good technical preparation but less than ideal physical preparation so I had good flow through this course but at somewhat less than normal competition speed given the runnability. Still, happy with this other than the awful fall backwards into a prickly bush and the log within in lying in wait to bash the upper part of my right hip that I did inside the circle attacking the penultimate control. That resulted in a fair bit of soreness and stiffness overnight, though only slight worries about functional impairment the next day, and in a quite impressively colourful bruise about half the size of the palm of my hand.

Cycling 29:00 [3]

Cycling to work.

Running 1:50:00 [2]

Run home through Rock Creek Park. Saw many deer and a couple of racoons and, most unprecedentedly, a group of 8 or 9 other night runners on the roughest section of the Valley Trail. Some running club deviating from their usual routine, I suppose.

Having used it a few times now, I've decided my new Osprey Talon 22 is a great running backpack. Not so great that it isn't a good idea to make sure the part of the pack that rests on the top of my hips is full of clothing rather than anything graced with a rigid edge but still quite great.
