Cycling 1:02:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of the aquatic center.

Swimming 1:12:00 [2]

Long wait flutterkicking for a deeper lane to open up.

Deep Water Running 43:00 [2]

Then I finished the workout running. Listened to the end of L' Histoire du Soldat, Hungarian lesson 12 again, some more of The Rest is Noise and part of a concert version of Prokofiev's Ivan the Terrible.

Monday Mar 30, 2009 #

Cycling 1:10:00 [3]

Cycling to Cardiovascular Consultants at Washington Adventist Hospital (apparently, in addition to the things on my previous tests that justify further testing, I show some signs of Marfan's Syndrome, though probably not enough to say I actually have it) and then to work.

Home by way of the Silver Spring TPSS.

Core exercises 8:00 [4]

Abdominal stuff while watching House.

Sunday Mar 29, 2009 #

Orienteering race 1:23:44 [4]

Ran-it Granite Long. Fell and bashed my left thigh on a log while gradually dropping downhill leaving 10. Was somewhat halt for the next control or three - guessed that slowed me down by a minute or two over the rest of the course but it might have been somewhat more, though hardly enough to move me up by more than one position. Since I stupidly failed to bring enough packets of gel to get me through the weekend, the effects of the injury would be hard to entirely disentangle from the effects of running a little low on fuel in the late stages of the course.

Hiking 2:15:00 [1]

Spent the balance of the afternoon limping around with my GPS getting most of the rest of the trail network and as many of the features in the perhaps slightly more than a square kilometer of nice woods as I could find while sweeping quickly through the area with very little, if any, overlap between what I could see in one pass and what I could see on the next one coming back in the opposite depression. May have missed some pits and cup depressions but there didn't seem to be much in that vein. Fortunately, mappable rock, of which there was a lot more than I'd realised on Friday, generally sticks out of the ground.

Saturday Mar 28, 2009 #

Orienteering race 32:57 [4]

Ran-it Granite Middle

Hiking 40:00 [1]

Came back to the same terrain as the day before, this time with my GPS. Took tracks on much of the trail network.

Orienteering race 17:26 [5] 3.0 km (5:49 / km)

First leg of victorious sprint relay team with Eric and Emily. Fun having that many people ahead of me in the woods to chase down or ignore as circumstances dictated.

Friday Mar 27, 2009 #

Orienteering race 13:24 [5]

First sprint.

Orienteering race 12:50 [5]

Second sprint.

Hiking 30:00 [1]

After the sprints, went to have a quick look at some terrain on the way back to DC. Initially looked as though the whole area was a sea of Japanese barberry cut up by trails but I was both undaunted and fortunate - when I continued to the portion of the area above the floodplain that looked most interesting topographically, I found almost entirely open woods, largely trackless and with a sprinkling of rootstocks and even mappable rock features. It appeared this nice terrain amounted to approximately a square kilometer.

Cycling 1:02:00 [3]

Cycling commute including PCRM on the way home.

Note

Got rear ended at extremely low speed on the Beltway late in the afternoon on the way back to the office from a meeting. No more than a fenderbender and I think and hope I'll get out of it with just a slightly sore neck when I wake up tomorrow but we shall see. My colleague who was driving will, regrettably, probably have an extremely sore neck or perhaps worse - I think she was more affected largely due to having her neck twisted a little bit to one side, since she reported not being able to twist her head to the right afterwards, in addition to the pain.

Wednesday Mar 25, 2009 #

Cycling 24:56 [4]

Actually took me 25:18 (subtracted time stopped at one light) and that was from the first corner after leaving my front door since I was obstructed by Sacred Heart students clogging the sidewalk until then. Probably means unobstructed time door to door, red-lined, after my body has had all morning to wake up, hitting all the lights perfectly and in the absence of rush hour pedestrian traffic, is currently about 25:10. I think this is slightly faster than the similar occasion last fall but the effort level may have been slightly higher.

Cycling 32:00 [3]

Cycling home by way of the aquatic center.

Deep Water Running 1:50:00 [2]

More of The Rest is Noise then about 80% of Histoire du Soldat (the English version conducted by Stokowski - I wish the French version he did was available somewhere).

Tuesday Mar 24, 2009 #

Cycling 1:25:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Then home plus a round trip to the Kennedy Center to see the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company.

Monday Mar 23, 2009 #

Cycling 1:02:00 [3]

Commute including going by TPSS and the aquatic center on the way home.

Deep Water Running 1:45:00 [2]

Listened to more of The Rest is Noise - finishing up Berg, and covering Stravinsky's early successes and contemporaneous developments.

Sunday Mar 22, 2009 #

Cycling 1:35:00 [3]

Cycling parts of getting to and from Rosaryville and home from the NGA.

Orienteering 25:00 [3]

Picking up the three least convenient controls from the training course. Fortunately, Pat Zerfas, Mihai, Corinne and Patti Mace got the rest of them for me or I wouldn't have made it to a film downtown at 4:30pm. Did my part of Mogogoglobo on the way to the Metro station from the park.

Saturday Mar 21, 2009 #

Cycling 2:02:00 [3]

Cycling parts of getting around a day of terrain scouting, control hanging and map printing.

Hiking 2:15:00 [1]

Walking parts of terrain scouting and control hanging. Perhaps I oughtn't to discount all this by half but justifying treating this day differently would be too much ethical wrestling.

It's a great time of year to use Rosaryville - the mapped light and even medium green has good visibility and the latter isn't, in general, inevitably painful or even all that much of a fight to get through.

Friday Mar 20, 2009 #

Cycling 57:00 [3]

Work commute, uphill direction. Followed, of course, by the downhill return journey late in the evening after doing some post-work OCAD drafting.

Thursday Mar 19, 2009 #

In-line Skating 35:00 [3]

Skating to work.

Note

Still out-training Hillary by 26 seconds. Won't last much longer unless she's taking a rest for the rest of the day.

Cycling 34:00 [3]

Cycling home by way of PCRM.

Wednesday Mar 18, 2009 #

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Cycling to work.

Running 1:40:00 [2] 16.0 km (6:15 / km)

Run home through Rock Creek Park. Dark enough to need light the last 40 minutes.

Tuesday Mar 17, 2009 #

Cycling 1:02:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of the aquatic center.

Swimming 1:10:00 [2]

Flutterkicking while waiting for the mass of swimmers to reach the end of their endurance and vacate a lane in the deeper part of the pool.

Deep Water Running 40:00 [2]

Remainder of the pool time after the swimmers thinned out.

Monday Mar 16, 2009 #

Cycling 1:14:00 [3]

Cycling to work by way of Deal Middle School in upper northwest DC, where I returned a student's wallet that I found on 16th St late last week. Home by way of the aquatic center.

Deep Water Running 1:28:00 [2]

Hungarian lesson 11 and most of the second CD of The Rest is Noise.

Sunday Mar 15, 2009 #

Event: QOC: Wheaton

Cycling 1:22:00 [3]

Cycling to and from Wheaton.

Orienteering race 44:26 [4]

QOC Wheaton Red - 2nd, 23 seconds behind Ken. Don't think my 180 out of the start for 20 meters or so amounts to that much but my lamentable rough compass work from 10 to 11 certainly covers it. Of course, Ken logged it as only 18 spikes out of 20 so also must have had some room for technical improvement. Will be interesting to see where the two of us stand against wider competition in two weeks.

Orienteering 28:00 [2]

Control pickup.

Saturday Mar 14, 2009 #

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]

Cycling parts of round trip to Rosaryville.

Hiking 2:17:00 [1]

Course setting/map updating at Rosaryville in continuous light rain/mist that wasn't mentioned in the forecast. Not so many new rootstocks in the nice woods west of the road to the Mount Airy Mansion as east of it but someone - curse them - has gone and made a new trail through the largest block of uniformly white woods in the park west of Dower House Pond and immediately north of Rosaryville Road and built a new hunter's stand. I'll have to inform the park management, I suppose.

Friday Mar 13, 2009 #

Cycling 56:00 [3]

Cycling to work and back. Had intended on going to the pool on the way home but got very late notice that a high school classmate was in town for work so had dinner with him instead.

Thursday Mar 12, 2009 #

Cycling 1:05:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of PCRM and the Cleveland Park library.

Form exercises 10:00 [3]

Indoor silly walks.

Tuesday Mar 10, 2009 #

Cycling 1:03:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of the aquatic center.

Deep Water Running 1:50:00 [2]

Did most of a Hungarian lesson and listened to the first CD's worth of the audiobook of The Rest is Noise (covering mostly Strauss and Mahler) and most of the fourth movement of Beethoven's ninth.

Monday Mar 9, 2009 #

Cycling 1:03:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of the aquatic center.

Deep Water Running 45:00 [3]

What I had time for before I wanted to get home. Will stay longer tomorrow.

Sunday Mar 8, 2009 #

Cycling 1:16:00 [3]

Round trip between Branch Avenue Metro and Rosaryville.

Hiking 2:20:00 [1]

Half the time I spent at Rosaryville. Surveyed the two new large rootstocks in the southern part of the map that had been spotted during the meet last November. Also the several even newer rootstocks in a large area of blowdown just west of one of the first two and a few others on the way over to the eastern fringes of the park which I never field checked the first time around (it appears, based on the direction almost all of the new rootstocks fell, that a significant windstorm hit the park from the west sometime since November - I'll have to go take a look at what it did to the west end of the park next chance I get). Covered the latter rapidly, partly because features were rare and partly because I didn't take the time to capture all of the thick vegetation in the southeast adequately, it being a low priority given how uninteresting that corner of the park is. I may simply make the whole area light green for the moment - it wouldn't be far from the truth, excepting the thicker patches with I mostly did map.

Somewhat disappointingly, there didn't appear to be any new rootstocks in the large bland area across the road east of Dower House Pond.

Saturday Mar 7, 2009 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Cycling parts of getting to Greenbelt and back (took Metro out but cycled all the way home).

Hiking 4:00:00 [1]

Field checking and three hours doing invasive plant removal at Greenbelt, discounted to half of the elapsed time. Invasive plan removal was mostly pulling the roots of honeysuckle to prevent them spreading. Found out that the big rough open patch I ran through early in the blue course in January was the result of the NPS invasives commando unit poisoning an iolanthus tree that had taken over that patch of forest - apparently the species sends out roots from which sprout apparently separate trees such that a fairly large stand can be all one individual.

Friday Mar 6, 2009 #

Cycling 1:25:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of the Freer Gallery for a very strange film by Oshima, Three Resurrected Drunkards.

Thursday Mar 5, 2009 #

Cycling 1:03:00 [3]

Cycling to work then home by way of PCRM.

Tuesday Mar 3, 2009 #

Note

Another day without cycling or exercise for its own sake. Still did a fair bit of walking, primarily home from the Kennedy Center after another dance performance from the Arabesque selection, but there's a limit to the amount of walking I'm willing to log in a week if it didn't mostly occur in chunks larger than an hour.

Monday Mar 2, 2009 #

Note

Woke up, as no doubt a number of other Attackpointers did, to a beautiful but inconvenient snowfall. Although it might be enough to go skiing on flat grassy areas so maybe I shouldn't be down on it. Mostly, I'm worried it may still be around next weekend to interfere with field checking then.

Walking 1:30:00 [1]

Absent other exercise in the day, I felt I at least needed to walk home on the snowy and icy sidewalks. Carried a moderately weighty backpack but this was still, despite the footing, barely justifiable to log.

Sunday Mar 1, 2009 #

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Had planned to go out to Rosaryville to update the existing map a bit and finish mapping the fringes of the park but called it off when I checked the forecast and saw it was supposed to start snowing and/or sleeting at 2pm so got only this minimal amount of exercise in for the day as I puttered about the house, got a haircut, sorted my 2007/8 maps out a bit, etc.
