Note

Potomac Valley Games - all comers track meet? Possible QOC session with invasive plant specialist. Neither as it turned out - will do invasive plant thing next Sunday after Bowie and PVTC failed to mention the deadline for online registration for the PVG on their web site. I didn't feel like paying the late fee and showing up way early in order to register an hour before the 3000m races were scheduled to start.

Cycling 38:00 [3]

Round trip to the National Gallery to see another Oliveira film.

Running 6:36 [1]

Warmup/cooldown.

Form exercises 32:39 [4]

Silly walks, 3x100m strides and 10 steep uphill sprints.

Saturday Aug 30, 2008 #

Cycling 1:15:00 [3]

Cycling part of getting around to check out possible mapping project and to see a very dialogue-heavy Portuguese film at the National Gallery.

Hiking 1:15:00 [1]

Walking around the mapping prospect, staying on trails. Will have to go off trail in a future visit to get a fuller idea of just how much interest there will be for advanced orienteers but definitely worth mapping for local events based on what I saw.

Friday Aug 29, 2008 #

Swimming 35:00 [4]

Mix of back, breast and front crawl with flutterkicking. Having returned rental car in the morning, walked home from work by way of the aquatic center but won't log that.

Thursday Aug 28, 2008 #

Running 6:33 [1]

Warmup/cooldown. Ran after dark having decided to go see a very strange Korean action/comedy/police procedural (apparently Korean homicide detectives circa 1999 operated largely by beating leads on their primary target out of randomly selected small-time crooks) at the Freer Gallery.

Form exercises 24:29 [4]

Silly walks and 9x100m strides.

Note

I will write COCs (and WOC and O-ringen for that matter) up in slightly more detail. For now, I enjoyed myself and while my orienteering could definitely have been technically better but two COC elite bronze medals, doubling my lifetime COC medal haul (last time I'll have the chance to do that in a single year unless we start proliferating championships as in the US), certainly meets some sort of definition of success.

Cycling 1:02:00 [3]

Cycling to work and home with a side trip to the Cleveland Park Library to get some reading material for next week.

Wednesday Aug 13, 2008 #

Cycling 55:40 [3]

Cycling to work and back.

Running 15:50 [1]

Warmup/cooldown/rests.

Running 17:35 [5] 4.87 km (3:37 / km)

4x1217m intervals in 4:20, 4;22, 4:25 and 4:28. Not pushing quite as hard as sometimes since I'll be racing this weekend. I wonder how much of the progressive increase in times is due to the heat getting to me more over time as the workour progresses and how much is due to running up against cardiovascular limits and/or muscular fatigue. Memory claims the trend is less consistent in colder weather but a more rigorous comparison to support such a claim would be in order.

Tuesday Aug 12, 2008 #

In-line Skating 34:00 [3]

Skating to work since I'd left my bike there overnight.

Cycling 31:00 [3]

Cycling home with some food shopping en route.

Monday Aug 11, 2008 #

Cycling 29:30 [3]

Cycling to work.

Running 1:24:00 [2] 14.4 km (5:50 / km)

Run home through Rock Creek Park. Stayed entirely on the east side of the creek just for a change of scenery.

Note

Went to Screen on the Green with Dan and some other future librarians (is there a correct collective noun for librarians and/or prospective ones?) to see Superman. Found out I'd never actually caught any of the first one one TV. Also that John Ratzenberger was in it, looking weirdly young and thin (his face, at least - most of his body wasn't in the picture).

Saturday Aug 9, 2008 #

Paddling 1:45:00 [1]

Birthday canoe outing with Dan from Georgetown up to within sight of Chain Bridge and back. Saw quite a few ducks and at least a couple of different herons plus a pair of some sort of fishing raptor (ospreys?).

Friday Aug 8, 2008 #

Cycling 28:00 [4]

Cycling to work, slightly faster than I thought I was currently capable of. May even be the record since I moved to my current address. Surprising, though I was feeling energetic and working hard, it seeming the least I could do after skipping doing a longer morning workout.

Cycling 26:00 [3]

Cycling home in the evening.

Thursday Aug 7, 2008 #

Running 1:22:35 [2]

Run to work through Rock Creek Park.

Cycling 38:00 [3]

Cycling home by way of PCRM.

Wednesday Aug 6, 2008 #

Cycling 33:00 [3]

Cycling to work by way of the aquatic center.

Deep Water Running 23:00 [4]

Would have run a bit longer but the usual clocks were nowhere to be seen so I had to simply guess as to when I'd come close to the intended workout duration.

Running 1:38:55 [2]

Run home through Rock Creek Park.

Tuesday Aug 5, 2008 #

Cycling 1:02:00 [3]

Cycling to work and home with some grocery shopping along the way.

Monday Aug 4, 2008 #

Cycling 1:02:00 [3]

Cycling to work and uselessly home by way of the library and McGruders in Chevy Chase, where I realised I had left my wallet at home and had neither my library card nor any means to pay for groceries.

Running 6:21 [1]

Warmup/cooldown.

Form exercises 32:54 [4]

Silly walks, 10 sprints up the short, steep hill, 3x100m strides and some more silly walks,

Sunday Aug 3, 2008 #

Note

The weekend was devoted to visiting Dan's sister and her partner and their almost brand new (5 weeks) baby girl in New York. Much food and little exertion - shouldn't hurt much to rest that way for a couple of days, may even help.

Friday Aug 1, 2008 #

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]

Cycling to work, to the Freer Gallery after work, then home from Chinatown after a post-movie dinner with Dan.
