Cycling 32:00 [3]

Commute to work by way of the aquatic center.

Deep Water Running 20:00 [4]

Another failure to get to the pool early enough for a long workout. Oh well - it may be best not to overdo it before the weekend in Ottawa anyway.

Wednesday Jan 30, 2008 #

Cycling 59:00 [3]

Blustery work commute in - some gusts were strong enough to be hazardous if they caught one unprepared. Home by way of Dave Hauver's place to catch a ride with him to the QOC BOD meeting.

Tuesday Jan 29, 2008 #

Cycling 1:03:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of the pool.

Note

The organiser seems to think the Winterlude Triathlon on Saturday will include all three disciplines this year - must believe that the ice is thick enough everywhere so it's just a matter of them grooming the surface from Bank Street to Dow's Lake. Though I'll still hold off on registering until Thursday.

Perhaps even better, I've been reminded OOC is holding a Ski-O on Sunday. Time for my first OOC event since the year the ice storm forced them to cancel the triathlon.

Swimming 23:00 [3]

A bit of breast stroke and freestyle then flutterkicking.

Deep Water Running 1:05:00 [2]

Until my stomach told me I hadn't done enough to fill it before leaving work and I therefore needed to get home forthwith.

Monday Jan 28, 2008 #

Cycling 1:05:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of both TPSS locations.

Core exercises 8:00 [4]

Another attempt at getting back into doing these consistently.

Sunday Jan 27, 2008 #

Note

QOC Lake Fairfax - course setter.

Orienteering 40:00 [2]

Approximate time on the move hanging and picking up controls.

Orienteering 35:00 [3]

Pre-meet tour around the controls I didn't hang that morning checking that they hadn't been stolen overnight and the boxes were working.

Orienteering 15:18 [5] 2.9 km (5:17 / km)

Unofficially ran the shorter of my two advanced sprint courses.

Orienteering 18:05 [4] 3.0 km (6:02 / km)

Also ran my other advanced sprint course. Couldn't manage quite the same intensity on this one.

Saturday Jan 26, 2008 #

Note

Rosaryville unless I decide I can't hang everything at Lake Fairfax on the morning of the event. Or maybe Rosaryville then go hang controls at Lake Fairfax late in the afternoon.

Hiking 1:30:00 [1]

Just over three hours mapping at Rosaryville.

Orienteering 1:25:00 [2]

Hanging about three quarters of the controls at Lake Fairfax. Hung the last nine after dark using my headlamp.

Friday Jan 25, 2008 #

Cycling 57:00 [3]

Work commute.

Thursday Jan 24, 2008 #

Cycling 1:06:00 [3]

Work commute, returning home by way of PCRM.

Wednesday Jan 23, 2008 #

Cycling 57:00 [3]

Work commute.

Tuesday Jan 22, 2008 #

Cycling 57:00 [3]

Cycling to and from work.

Monday Jan 21, 2008 #

Cycling 57:00 [3]

Round trip to work.

Sunday Jan 20, 2008 #

Orienteering race 1:14:01 [4] 10.0 km (7:24 / km) +215m 6:41 / km

Anza Borrego Day 2 - not clean but stil baffling just how far behind I ended up. Enough to make me wonder if I was subtly ill.

Orienteering race 27:17 [3]

Anza Borrego Maze-O - just about the coolest terrain ever, especially the walk to the start through the slot canyon.

Saturday Jan 19, 2008 #

Orienteering race 1:31:57 [4] 9.0 km (10:13 / km) +330m 8:38 / km

Anza Borrego day 1 - massive error on control 10 and running out of gas late in the course for a very bad result.

Orienteering race 17:59 [5] 2.8 km (6:25 / km)

Anza Borrego Sprint - had a good enough race going for, probably, fourth until I mentally skipped a control and wasted about 2.5 minutes completely failing to figure out what I'd done until Patrick passed through.

Thursday Jan 17, 2008 #

Cycling 33:00 [3]

Cycling to work by way of the aquatic center.

Deep Water Running 21:00 [4]

Short session of fairly intense deep water running - trying to prepare body to run fast this weekend without causing a lot of wear and tear.

Note

Lovely snow falling and, for the second time this season in DC, accumulating. May complicate getting home tonight.

Cycling 35:00 [2]

Cautiously, even though the streets were moslty clear, cycling home.

Wednesday Jan 16, 2008 #

In-line Skating 35:00 [3]

Skated to work as, arguably, part of being nice to my right Achilles tendon.

Cycling 36:00 [3]

Home by way of TPSS and the Avalon Theater - saw OSS 117, a recent French spy film spoof, largely riffing on early Bond films but with a big debt to Get Smart as well.

Tuesday Jan 15, 2008 #

Cycling 1:12:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Then to and from a dental checkup.

Running 1:34:00 [2] 15.0 km (6:16 / km)

Run home through Rock Creek Park - one racoon and one deer sighted. Felt something unpleasant around the right Achilles tendon but hopefully it's nothing to worry about if I refrain from being mean to it.

Monday Jan 14, 2008 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of the aquatic center.

Swimming 1:00:00 [3]

A deeper lane never opened up so I did about 25 minutes of swimming using various strokes and the rest flutterkicking.

Core exercises 9:00 [4]

The customary but recently not so usual core exercises.

Sunday Jan 13, 2008 #

Cycling 1:36:00 [3]

Cycling from Franconia-Springfield Metro to Turkey Run Ridge, slightly discounted to allow for time waiting for traffic lights to change.

Orienteering race 1:02:11 [4] 8.2 km (7:35 / km)

QOC South Fork Blue - sloppy in relatively small ways on too many controls and thumped by Lacho in consequence - too bad he won't be around in future to administer similar object lessons. Will have to execute much better at Anza-Borrego if I want to do respectably.

Orienteering 50:00 [2]

An estimate of the time I spent picking up controls.

Saturday Jan 12, 2008 #

Note

Course setting at Lake Fairfax, to whatever extent necessary. Go to Rosaryville also or otherwise as the case may be.

Hiking 3:00:00 [1]

Course setting and field checking at Lake Fairfax, which took longer than I'd hoped, and then a quick visit to another nearby park since getting to Rosaryville in time to do anything before darkness fell was clearly impossible.

Friday Jan 11, 2008 #

Running 1:15:20 [2] 8.0 mi (9:25 / mi)

Run in to work through Rock Creek Park and mere overcast/mist. Met a couple of other runners, a rare occurrence in the park that early on a weekday morning.

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Cycling home by way of the Silver Spirng TPSS.

Thursday Jan 10, 2008 #

Cycling 29:30 [4]

Actually timed myself this morning cycling in so, inevitably, went harder than usual. Looks as though logging the standard commute in as 30 minutes is still a slight underestimate.

Running 1:24:00 [2] 8.0 mi (10:30 / mi)

Very easy trail run home through Rock Creek Park and rain so light it didn't seem to have created any mud that wasn't there on Monday and Tuesday.

Wednesday Jan 9, 2008 #

Note

Something Like Happiness at the Avalon at 8pm - can't pass up a chance to test my listening comprehension on a film that won 8 Czech Lions.

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home Zorro style by way of the aquatic center then the Avalon Theater.

Deep Water Running 45:00 [4]

Had planned on running home by way of the Czech film but my feet felt Monday evening and Tuesday morning so did this instead. Unfortunate that it looks like it will rain tomorrow evening, when the running home is now supposed to happen.

Tuesday Jan 8, 2008 #

Running 1:18:00 [2]

Run to work through Rock Creek Park - one deer and many dogwalkers sighted but no beavers.

Cycling 35:00 [3]

Home by way of TPSS and the aquatic center.

Form exercises 36:00 [3]

Mostly flutterkicking - legs needed the loosening up.

Monday Jan 7, 2008 #

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Cycling to work. In inauspicious start to a renewed emphasis on high volume, low intensity training, didn't manage to get out of bed and go to the pool before work. At least I can't avoid running home this evening so easily.

Running 2:00:00 [2] 12.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Trail run home through Rock Creek Park. Saw one beaver a little bit north of the range covered by my previous sightings and a couple of deer near Fort DeRussey.

Sunday Jan 6, 2008 #

Note

Rosaryville in the afternoon after seeing Dan off at the airport? Actually, I'd probably better go to Lake Fairfax and get my course designs plus any map corrections under control first.

Cycling 1:15:00 [3]

Non-Metro parts of getting to and from Lake Fairfax.

Hiking 3:00:00 [1]

Logged half of the six hours I spent in Lake Fairfax Park vetting my intended control locations and making map corrections. Will finish up next Saturday.

Friday Jan 4, 2008 #

Cycling 57:00 [3]

Cycling to work and back.

Thursday Jan 3, 2008 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home with a stop at the Safeway on Georgia Ave along the way.

Wednesday Jan 2, 2008 #

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]

Cycling to work - no snow yet and apparently the chances of precipitation at all have diminished from what they were predicting yesterday. Home by way of TPSS then back to the AFI then home from there - Dan and I saw Bob le Flambeur.

Tuesday Jan 1, 2008 #

Cycling 57:00 [3]

Cycling to work - tempted to not work but no less orienteering travel in prospect this year than last so best not to use the time off. Directly home in the evening.

Note

My new night splints arrived yesterday and I'm pleased to report that testing last night says they are comfortable enough to sleep in. As to whether they'll have the desired effect, that will take a much longer test - my first few steps this morning felt pretty good but I haven't done anything particularly hard on my feet recently.

Strength 10:00 [2]

Time to start up with the one-legged squats once more.
