Cycling 1:22:00 [3]

Commute plus dropping by PCRM to volunteer then grocery shopping in Takoma Park.

Wednesday Aug 30, 2006 #

Cycling 59:00 [3]

Commute in and back. Would have done some further aerobic exercise in the evening but it seemed like time to get the courses for my clnic on Saturday drawn up in OCAD.

Core exercises 8:00 [4]

Some core exercises while watching US Open action, interrupted by a half hour conversation with Dan for which my abdominals were appropriately grateful even if the relief was temporary.

Tuesday Aug 29, 2006 #

Cycling 1:08:00 [2]

To work and home by way of the pool.

Swimming 36 [3]

Various strokes to begin then much flutterkicking with and without fins.

Deep Water Running 20:00 [4]

Bookended by the swimming. After holding up fine (aided by ibuprofen) through the COC Festival, my knees started feeling worse after playing with my nieces on Sunday so it's back to the pool for much of my training for a little while.

Monday Aug 28, 2006 #

Note

Totally inadequate detail in entries after the 22nd and who knows if I'll make the time to flesh them out much? C'est la vie. Sorry to anyone foolish enough to look here for insight.

Cycling 28:00 [2]

Cycling home from work.

Core exercises 8:00 [4]

Some abdominal, etc. exercises while watching Prison Break.

Sunday Aug 27, 2006 #

Orienteering race 1:43:28 [4] 11.8 km (8:46 / km) +240m 7:58 / km

COC Long - another pretty good race technically, though I could pick on a few minutes of error and no doubt another few of hesitations that wouldn't be part of a great run even for me. Felt like I utterly ran out of gas halfway through - will have to check splits and see if I really was moving that much slower even on clean legs in the latter part of the course as I basically just persisted while trying to move as fast as I could on trails and flat to downhill sections of open woods.

Saturday Aug 26, 2006 #

Orienteering race 53:47 [4] 5.2 km (10:21 / km)

COC middle - fumbled 8-9-10 but really went off the rails with a big parallel error on 16 in which it appears I lost about 4 minutes.

Orienteering race 16:15 [5] 2.85 km (5:42 / km)

COC Sprint - a pretty good race technically and at least okay physically but not sure of my precise time due to the timing difficulties and littleidea how it stacks up other than that Mike Smith clearly beat me since there's no way it was two minutes or more after I finished before he did.

Friday Aug 25, 2006 #

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

COC model event - wet in the woods, one missing control but there was a streamer, one that got rehung by someone else just as I'd concluded I was in the right place and the control wasn't. A definite warning to respect the various shades of green.

Orienteering race 4:29 [5] 1.1 km (4:05 / km)

Last Speed-O - got Darius this time but John Frederickson put down a 4:13.

Orienteering race 15:00 [4]

Sass Peepre camp relay - a low key relay involving each person on a team doing three legs on three different maps.

Thursday Aug 24, 2006 #

Orienteering 50:00 [2]

Sass Peepre camp - mostly controls from first exercise from Wednesday taken from different directions. Did all of these as memory-O, some of my charges doing likewise on a number of them.

Orienteering race 4:24 [5] 1.1 km (4:00 / km)

Speed-O number 2 - one second back of Darius this time.

Orienteering race 32:34 [4] 4.4 km (7:24 / km)

COC Festival Relay, lead leg on a 0 to 4 point team. Problem on 3, which I belive was mishung on the edge of an open area rather than further downslope on the edge of a rough open with scattered trees area (nowhere near as bad a mishanging as occurred on an early control on the edge of an open area on some other courses/forkings). The team of Eric and Randy Kemp on the next two legs hung on for the win.

Wednesday Aug 23, 2006 #

Orienteering 50:00 [2]

Sass Peepre camp first training.

Orienteering 3:51 [5] 0.9 km (4:17 / km)

First Speed-O (ultra-short sprint on 1:2500 map of mostly open area with scattered trees and buildings) at Sass Peepre Camp. Darius Konotopetz 10 seconds faster - good for him!

Orienteering 1:05:00 [2]

Sass Peepre camp Line-O - a challenge given somewhat vague terrain that could have stood more updating.

Tuesday Aug 22, 2006 #

Running 8:00 [1]

Warmup/cooldown.

Form exercises 12:00 [4]

Silly walks and 6x100m strides.

Cycling 33:00 [2]

Commute in, bulkily if not so heavily loaded despite all I brought in yesterday. Will have to do some paring down of clothing before flying.

Monday Aug 21, 2006 #

Cycling 58:00 [3]

Commute in and home. Carried most of my O gear to take to COCs in with me so I won't have to schlep everything to work tomorrow.

Sunday Aug 20, 2006 #

Cycling 34:00 [2]

To pool and grocery shopping then home.

Swimming 40:00 [3]

Initial 10 minutes or so of conventional swimming then much flutter kicking broken up by deep water running and lengths of butterfly.

Deep Water Running 26:00 [4]

Two blocks of running amidst the swimming.

Core exercises 8:00 [4]

The usual range of core not just abdominal exercises. I believe I did them while watching part of "Paycheck" on TV. I saw it from about halfway through once before. Must be one of the more faithful Philip K. Dick short story adaptations in terms of keeping the full complexity of the premise. Though I read the story long ago so perhaps they changed details and added fluff in ways that would offend me if I remembered the original better.

Saturday Aug 19, 2006 #

Cycling 1:05:00 [3]

To the post office to find that they had misinformed me as to which branch had my shipment from Orientsport, then from the Vienna Metro to Fountainhead.

Hiking 5:00:00 [1]

About two and a half hours streamering the control locations for the training clinic on September 2nd, then the rest GPS surveying trails not yet included on mostly the far eastern part of the map. Think I got fairly dehydrated despite drinking nearly two liters of water during the afternoon. Though part of my queasy feeling may have been due to lack of food since I find that's even harder to force down in sufficient quantity on a hot day.

Saw many deer and one and a half box turtles (one was an empty shell).

Running 20:00 [2]

Jogging back to the parking area after finishing up with the trails.

Cycling 1:19:00 [2]

Back to the Metro plus cycling to the AFI to see "The Five Venoms" then home. Stopped in at the office before the film and managed to take in enough liquids and near liquids (watermelon) to get back to feeling normal.

Friday Aug 18, 2006 #

Running 8:00 [1]

Warmup/cooldown.

Form exercises 18:00 [4]

Silly walks and 6x100m strides.

Cycling 1:22:00 [3]

Commute in then home by way of the Freer Gallery for a sample of the more psychologically complex style of Hong Kong thriller.

Thursday Aug 17, 2006 #

Cycling 1:15:00 [3]

Commute in by way of the pool and home by way of volunteer night at PCRM.

Deep Water Running 31:00 [4]

One continuous session of deep water running, sans swimming or kicking breaks.

Core exercises 8:00 [4]

More thorough job of exercising my midsection, including back and glutes.

Wednesday Aug 16, 2006 #

Cycling 1:06:00 [3]

Commute in and home, passing by the pool along the way.

Swimming 30:00 [3]

Half a km or thereabouts of various strokes and a lot of flutter kicking.

Deep Water Running 29:00 [4]

Two blocks of running embedded in the swimming.

Core exercises 2:00 [4]

Small amount of this while watching Project Runway. Might have done a bit more but there was talking to Dan on the phone to fit in as well.

Tuesday Aug 15, 2006 #

Cycling 1:07:00 [3]

Time to do some exercise again, starting with the usual cycling. To work then home by way of the pool.

Swimming 45:00 [3]

About 600m of swimming, the rest flutter kicking either without or mostly with my new fins.

Deep Water Running 30:00 [4]

Two periods of DWR amidst the swimming.

Saturday Aug 12, 2006 #

Note

Did nothing all weekend more strenuous than walking around a tiny bit of the trail network near the CNYO rogaine base camp. Dan and sister won the 6 hour female race. More significantly, since all the other all female teams registered as masters teams, they finished within six hours and therefore with a positive number of points. Even slightly more points than Barb Sleight and her partner. And with no significantly damaged ankles between the two of them.

Thursday Aug 10, 2006 #

Cycling 1:22:00 [3]

To work and home by way of volunteer night at PCRM and the main branch of the library. Wonder how knees will feel about driving but not, unless Dan's sister has to bail on the rogaine, doing anything especially strenuous this weekend. Think I'll do much deep water running and just a little running on land next week in leadup to COCs.

Cycling 1:02:00 [3]

Cycling to work and home. Library trustees meeting on the way home - first chance to see new DCPL director in action. Not quite as favourably impressed as with the now departed interim director but she does a reasonable impression of an irresistible force - quite possibly a good thing since DCPL does an awesome immovable object.

Of perhaps more concern than whether I'm running slow for a good reason, my doctor doesn't seem all that optimistic that my knees will allow me to run around like Peter Gagarin when I'm his age. Doesn't seem to have any illusions about my dialing back my activity level voluntarily but recommends I keep up the isometric exercises I did in the past to address chondromalacia patella.

Tuesday Aug 8, 2006 #

Cycling 1:35:00 [3]

Cycling to workand to and from appointment with doctor early in the afternoon to see whether anything fixable is physically wrong with me and then home again. Doctor isn't particularly alarmed at my perceived physical underperformance relative to the fairly recent past but is willing to play along as far as verifying that nothing is obviously out of whack in my biochemistry goes. It is also apparently my time of life for PSA tests to begin.

Monday Aug 7, 2006 #

Cycling 1:08:00 [3]

Back to normal routine. Commute in and home with grocery shopping along the way.

Sunday Aug 6, 2006 #

Note

Had just over seven hours between arrival in London. Spent just over half of it walking around the center of town between literary and other landmarks starting with Fenchurch Street Station (of "So Long And Thanks For All The Fish" fame) and ending outside the Sherlock Holmes museum on Baker Street just to have been there.

Orienteering race 53:30 [4] 4.4 km (12:10 / km)

Last WOC Tour open course. Comically sustained 180 on the way from 8 to 9 when I got turned around in thick vegetation again. Otherwise fine but still feeling slow. I may just suck but I think I'll ask my doctor for some blood testing and anything else she thinks is reasonable looking for an explanation for my feeling that I can't race at the same intensity I've been accustomed to, even when the orienteering is technically fairly easy - I'd feel very silly if it turned out something was wrong and I delayed seeking diagnosis and treatment just because I wasn't sure.

Score one for the heart rate monitor types, who would quite likely know whether something like what I suspect was wrong long before I clued in.

Great final leg from Patrick in the relay!

Friday Aug 4, 2006 #

Orienteering 53:16 [4] 6.3 km (8:27 / km)

After watching Holger's nail biting victory, another Open 1 WOC Tour course . Shaky start technically in the thick area the last loops of the Middle Finals courses went through, then settled down and later had no particular troubles in the more open woods although I still felt slow. Think I need to work more on precision compass and pace in thick areas where I can't see very far into the terrain around me.

Thursday Aug 3, 2006 #

Orienteering race 1:06:31 [4] 8.1 km (8:13 / km)

Open 1 WOC Tour course - no big mistakes other than between 9 and 10, where I started out of 9 by getting turned around in thick vegetation and only caught myself when I emerged onto a trail, turned the way I thought I ought to, then went through the process of converting "I'm heading due west; why isn't the terrain matching up?" into the correct "I'm heading due east; no wonder the terrain isn't matching up. I'd better turn around." Slow.

Note

So why am I running so slowly? The possibilities that occur to me are mild undiagnosed illness, overtraining and/or insufficient/inappropriate training. Not sure how to go about deciding how close any of these are to the truth - it's not as though I've been tracking my resting pulse on waking or HRM data while exercising in the past to compare with current values. So do I try resting and risk further deterioration in fitness before COCs or do I carry on and see whether things improve?

Wednesday Aug 2, 2006 #

Form exercises 16:30 [3]

Some silly walks and 50m strides shortly before bedtime just to wake my body up after a couple of days with no intense activity. Also, hopefully, to make it easier to get to sleep.

Tuesday Aug 1, 2006 #

Note

Congrats to Louise and las Saegerinas for their qualífying runs in the sprint this morning.

Addendum: their runs in the final also failed to uniformly suck.
