Hiking 2:45:00 [1] 9.47 km (17:25 / km)

Another search for wavyleaf basketgrass and unfortunately I found a lot of it on the slopes along the east side of Rock Creek, south of the Lake Frank dam. A fair bit of it actually along the edges of the paved, mixed-use trail, which makes me very surprised that apparently it hadn't already been reported - you'd think at least one person who knows wavyleaf to look at it would be in the habit of walking or riding along that path regularly (not that plants are more than a green blur most of the time when riding). Not confident there's any point in trying to remove it when it's as well-established as it has become but I'll report it up the chain of command and see what they think.

Cycling 25:00 [3]

Riding home from Union Station, stopping at Trader Joe's on the way to resupply the household with steel cut oats.

Running 7:00 [1]

Warmup/cooldown.

Form exercises 18:00 [3]

SIlly walks and six uphill sprints.

Normal intensity parts of cycling to work, to PCRM then home.

Cycling 19:55 [5] 9.06 km (2:12 / km) +63m 2:07 / km

CCT time trial on the way to PCRM. At least felt better than the last two but will be alarmed if these don't get substantially faster over the next month or so - I shouldn't slow down by more than a minute on something this short in just one year.

Wednesday Jun 18, 2014 #

Cycling 1:05:00 [3]

Commute plus dropping in on aquatic center on the way home.

Deep Water Running 1:10:00 [3]

Not quite a sustained 4 effort. Listened to two of David Levine's podcasts - Otakon sounds rather fun - lots of Tsui Hark films, among others. I didn't realise the otaku concept stretched to kung fu film fandom - maybe in Japan it doesn't but more things get lumped in with the core interest in manga and anime over here to reach critical mass for holding conventions.

Edit: actually, it seems the term in Japanese also applies to any obsessive interest, with manga and anime only being the most common combination (maybe far the most common). That's what I get for relying on manga to learn the meaning of Japanese slang.

Saturday Jun 14, 2014 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Non-Metro parts of getting to and from Lake Needwood and then going to the airport to pick up rental car.

Hiking 4:00:00 [1] 14.72 km (16:18 / km)

Hunting for wavyleaf basketgrass at Lake Needwood. Sadly, my hunt was successful - in fact, I stumbled across the first patch in less than a minute perhaps 30 meters from where I first started into the woods. Fortunately, I didn't continue to find my prey at such a torrid pace but I found enough, in two clusters, to make the prospect of trying to get it all (including the patches I didn't find but that likely, extrapolating from this search, exist) pulled before it goes to seed daunting.

Event: QOC Jug Bay

Orienteering race 56:21 [4] 8.1 km (6:57 / km) +110m 6:31 / km

QOC Beer Chase Blue - made it around first loop mostly just a little behind Ken and Dan Quinn and just ahead of Mike Berry, Eddie having missed slightly to the left on the first control and not caught up thereafter. Lost sight of Ken just before the end of the loop and never saw him again while Dan, doing Red, split off and I apparently lost Mike around the 3rd control on the second loop - presumably I pulled away just enough on the long leg to 3 that he was able to completely independently make a big mistake on the short leg to 4. Saw Eddie on his way to the 2nd loop go control as I started on my third loop so figured I was in serious danger of being run down but he was apparently, as a protest of sorts, taking a 3 minute penalty each loop rather than do the rather tame/lame obstacle that had been inserted at the end of each loop just before the drinking. Maybe best to keep the event purely orienteering and drinking, though it might have been fun to insert some test of skill analogous to making a basketball three-pointer (say something with a bushel basket and tennis balls - or a long put at a disc golf target) that would have been hard enough to do just after running while affected by alcohol (or not) to make it at least possible the penalty would be quicker (particularly if you were allowed to study the map during the penalty).
