Orienteering race 44:33 [4] 4.75 km (9:23 / km)

West Point Middle - not the disaster of the middle/first race at West Point last year. Unfortunately, it was easier to improve quickly on that race than it will be to improve very much on this one.

Orienteering race 17:50 [5] 2.48 km (7:11 / km)

West Point Sprint - obviously better technically and avoiding large errors seems to have been the key in ending up faster than a few competitors. A bit surprised at just how much slower my start was than that of others.

Cycling 1:39:00 [3]

Home to work to College Park to vet control locations for a score-O in May and assess how much construction impact there is on the map to TPSS to home again. Won't log the 3 or so hours of very slow moving about the campus on foot.

Orienteering race 59:38 [4] 8.3 km (7:11 / km) +430m 5:42 / km

QOC McKeldin Blue - take off a few seconds for walking as a couple of horses passed, another few for stopping when a couple of hikers asked me a question and maybe a minute or so for small errors and it's presumably accurate to say Eddie can outrun me by about 4 minutes over eight kilometers of technically easy orienteering at the moment. If things go well over the next several weeks, I can perhaps hope to reduce that margin noticeably. Or blow up my left hamstring or right ankle or both and increase it greatly. We shall see. A nice day in the woods in any case.

Orienteering 1:23:00 [2]

Terrain scouting in southern VA, splitting a park with Greg. We both found shocking for Virginia quantities of mappable boulders, some of them vehicle-sized.

Orienteering race 1:25:00 [2] 8.6 km (9:53 / km)

QOC Westmoreland line/score-O - enjoyable outing in mostly fairly nice woods. Not feeling up to anything like usual race effort - still stiff and sore from UL Champs - and the climbs at Westmoreland can be pretty gigantic so none too fast around the course.

Orienteering 1:02:00 [1]

A bit more terrain scouting in Charles County on the way home. Horrid vegetation almost everywhere I visited.

Friday Apr 8, 2011 #

Cycling 1:15:00 [3]

To work. Unpleasant rainy ride from there to the Freer Gallery to see a Korean film. Fortunately I had dry stuff to change into for the film. Home from there in thankfully dry conditions.

Orienteering race 47:40 [2] 5.2 km (9:10 / km)

Flying Pig Middle #2 - other parts of the drive train were unhappy but my left hamstring vetoed running in any meaningful, full-striding sense of the word so I just jogged around the course. I assumed Maricel had a similar experience to be only a couple of minutes ahead of me but it looks as though he was running fairly fast and making big mistakes.

Saturday Apr 2, 2011 #

Orienteering race 2:32:03 [3] 19.3 km (7:53 / km) +650m 6:45 / km

US Ultralong Champs - surprisingly third with the AP analysis saying three more people would have beaten me if they'd managed to keep their error time no higher than mine. I suppose I can legitimately take credit for some combination of better pacing and better navigation while fatigued but having more speed if not necessarily speed to burn would be nice. Managed not to reinflict significant damage on my right ankle and it's at least somewhat encouraging that my left hamstring didn't fail during the race but the aftermath of this was painful.

Friday Apr 1, 2011 #

Orienteering race 38:42 [4] 5.5 km (7:02 / km)

Flying Pig Middle #1 - one huge mistake and one medium sized one in an otherwise okay but not brilliant race. Looks as though my running speed is currently significantly if not enormously less than that of the top tier of North American elites, which may or may not, given my late starting base training this year, be fixable over the next month or so, assuming my body holds up.
