Cycling 30:00 [3]

Cycling to work.

Sunday Sep 27, 2009 #

Event: QOC Patuxent

Orienteering race 1:07:52 [4] 8.9 km (7:38 / km)

QOC Patuxent Blue - sloppy first couple of controls then okay technically, though route choice through the vegetation was a bit of a crapshoot on a few legs - to controls 4 and 5 I found routes through at least slightly less thick vegetation that weren't hinted at by the map. Felt not quite fully recovered from the previous day or two - hamstrings, in particular, felt slightly pre-fatigued. Therefore not surprised Eddie, who certainly appeared to be running hard to the finish, ran this in 5.5 minutes less and a sick Ken in only a few minutes more than my time.

Swimming 25:00 [3]

Flutterkicking recovery workout.

Monday Sep 21, 2009 #

In-line Skating 35:00 [3]

Skated to work. Nothing feeling too bad, at least not anything crucial to inline skating. Probably means cycling home will also feel fine. Won't do anything running-ish before tomorrow evening.

Cycling 33:00 [3]

Cycled home by way of TPSS and Safeway.

Orienteering race 2:37:20 [4] 19.1 km (8:14 / km) +535m 7:14 / km

US Ultra-long Champs - easily best race of the weekend, never missed any controls though I was hesitant/inefficient on some number (not that finding the controls was very difficult, in general). Tried to push hard on the trail runs but wasn't feeling as wasted physically as has usually been the case after this event (downhill finish helps, I suppose) so may not have pushed quite hard enough. Winsplits says one identifiable mistake worth about 3.5 minutes which I'll blame on what I perceived as the undermapping of some ferociously thorny vegetation fringing one of the clearings athwart a relatively direct route towards 9 - I ended up going well around to the left and it apparently would have been faster to have gone around the clearings through the light green to the right of the clearings, which option I had rejected in my initial route choice and didn't think to consider when it became clear I wasn't going to get through the vegetation where I'd intended (though I might have been too far north by then for the right hand route to have been viable anyway). I also lost some time to sloppy rough compass, in particular from control 5 towards the track I attacked 6 from - went too directly south and ended up running around the edge of a pond/marsh that I should have passed safely to the west of. Went straight at first from 13 towards 14 through the area that wasn't field checked - no doubt the road would have been faster but I felt committed by the time that was clear and continuing until I reached the shallow reentrant east of the control, to be only briefly confused by what struck me as being an unmapped marsh, succeeded without a major time loss.

Orienteering race 15:37 [5] 2.6 km (6:00 / km) +60m 5:23 / km

US Sprint Champs - non-disastrous but not very good.

Orienteering race 37:21 [4] 5.6 km (6:40 / km) +245m 5:28 / km

ROC A meet middle - moderately good/better race than sprint certainly, though not free of significant errors, two of which were quite silly and hard to excuse. Still, was much more in control of my orienteering.

Cycling 58:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of the aquatic center.

Swimming 1:40:00 [2]

Flutterkicking., partly because of swimmers training and waterpolo and partly because of volume problems with headphones - set to maximum and could only just hear in one ear even underwater. May have to order new ones.

Tuesday Sep 15, 2009 #

In-line Skating 35:00 [3]

Skating to work.

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Cycling home from work via the AFI (saw The Spirit of the Beehive with Dan) and also to and from the neighbourhood Safeway.

Monday Sep 14, 2009 #

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Cycling to work.

Running 1:40:00 [2]

Trail run home through Rock Creek Park. I think I may be happier in a month or so when I need a headlamp for the duration of these rather than doing without until things feel dangerous than having to fish it out. Had to turn my light off late in the run at a horsewoman's request, so as not to risk her horse bolting to escape the apparently approaching cyclops. A little later, a toad chose to cross my path at the perfect moment to be caught in the spotlight.

Core exercises 8:00 [4]

Sunday Sep 13, 2009 #

Orienteering race 1:13:40 [4] 9.0 km (8:11 / km)

QOC Hemlock long score-O course - distance is what the course setter claims it took to visit them all. I haven't measured the distance for the sequence I took them in - basically a counterclockwise loop of the map starting by heading northeast.

Orienteering 1:05:00 [2]

Easy jog to the south end of the map mostly on the Bull Run Occoquan Trail then picking up 9 controls on the way back to the start/finish.

Saturday Sep 12, 2009 #

Cycling 35:00 [3]

Round trip to aquatic center and TPSS.

Deep Water Running 2:00:00 [2]

LSD in the pool. Pretty quiet on a Saturday morning though maybe that won't be the case as the outside weather gets less pleasant later in the fall and winter.

Friday Sep 11, 2009 #

Cycling 57:00 [3]

Cycling to work in the wet. Fortunately, I'm well equipped for it fender and neoprene booty-wise.

Home as well.

Note

Potomac Valley Games - one, two or all three of 3000m, mile, 800m?

Running race 5:00 [5] 1.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Track mile at PVTC meet - 5:00:25 officially. Trying to get under 5 minutes will have to wait until next year, unless I think my physical condition improves enough to take a stab at it in a solo time trial rather than in a race.

In-line Skating 45:00 [3]

Miscellaneous skating getting to and from track meet.

Running 45:00 [1]

Evening jog in Rock Creek Park with Dan.

Saturday Sep 5, 2009 #

Note

Arlington 9-11 Memorial 5K Run - QOC team again?

Running race 17:22 [5] 5.0 km (3:28 / km)

9-11 Memorial 5K on QOC team with Tom and Nadim - 4 seconds faster than last year on same course is a mild surprise to me. Tougher field than last year even allowing for some of the Pacer's team people running unofficially in 2008. Tom improved on last year by 37 seconds and Nadim also exceeded his stated expectations by going under 20 minutes. All told, it was good enough for third in the Open Team category.

Friday Sep 4, 2009 #
