Cycling 55:00 [3]

Cycling to work and back.

Note

The Minnesota Senate election appears, finally, to be decided. Fortunately, Al Franken himself will now presumably provide entertainment directly rather than by provoking Coleman's legal team into doing their Keystone Cops routine* so I shouldn't be too much at a loss for diversion.

* Not that I won't appreciate the show when he causes some persons' heads to explode.

Core exercises 6:00 [4]

Abdominal exercises.

Cycling 56:00 [3]

Cycling to work and back.

Sunday Jun 28, 2009 #

Note

PVTC All Comers Track Meet - mile, 3000m, 800m?

Cycling 22:00 [3]

Cycling parts of getting to the track meet.

Running race 5:01 [5] 1.61 km (3:07 / km)

Mile race - 400 meter track so four and a tiny bit laps, official time 5:01.7

Running race 10:04 [5] 3.0 km (3:21 / km)

3000m - official time 10:03.8

Running race 2:25 [5] 0.8 km (3:01 / km)

800m - official time unavailable* when I left so going by what I think was showing on the clock when I crossed the line.

Now updated - official time was 2:24.6

Cycling 1:40:00 [2]

Cycling from the track meet to Scott's Run Nature Preserve then home.

Hiking 2:23:00 [1]

Hiking around the nature preserve. Negative on wavyleaf basketgrass sightings here as well.

Saturday Jun 27, 2009 #

Note

Invasive plant removal at Little Paint Branch Park - four hours, mostly spent pulling up wavyleaf basketgrass.

Cycling 41:00 [3]

Cycling from the Greenbelt Metro to Little Paint Branch Park to Northway Fields Park and back to the Metro.

Hiking 1:47:36 [1]

Walking around Northway Fields Park, on and off trail, looking for wavyleaf basketgrass. Came up negative again - the stuff doesn't seem to move from park to nearby park quite as easily as one might fear.

Monday Jun 22, 2009 #

Cycling 1:02:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of TPSS and the aquatic center.

Deep Water Running 50:00 [2]

Would have run more and swum less if there had been more than one lane open - some school group and a water polo practice took up two thirds of the pool.

Swimming 1:10:00 [2]

Flutterkicking.

Sunday Jun 21, 2009 #

Orienteering race 19:37 [4] 3.2 km (6:08 / km) +60m 5:36 / km

DVOA Green Lane W/Y - ran course 1 first after the mass start. Greg Ahlswede is excessively fast on highly runnable terrain but got delayed at the start by initially being given a blank map and then shot himself in the foot by trying to head from 6 to 8. I'm not sure how far he got before realising that - I'd guess maybe when he hit the paved road. In any case, finished ahead of him but not enough to cover the 30 seconds Vadim had promised to subtract from his time to make up for the blank map.

Orienteering race 26:33 [4] 3.1 km (8:34 / km) +95m 7:26 / km

DVOA Delmont Orange/Brown - started 4 or 5 minutes after finishing my first course, passed occasional slower-moving mass starters throughout the course.

Orienteering race 43:30 [4] 5.1 km (8:32 / km) +110m 7:42 / km

DVOA Delmont Green - finished the day's racing with the longest offered course.

Saturday Jun 20, 2009 #

Event: DVOA Delmont

Orienteering race 51:30 [4] 6.1 km (8:27 / km) +185m 7:20 / km

DVOA Delmont Red - wet.

Orienteering race 14:28 [4] 2.2 km (6:35 / km) +70m 5:40 / km

DVOA Delmont Sprint - still wet.

Orienteering 25:00 [1]

Control pickup - even wetter as actual rain resumed.

Friday Jun 19, 2009 #

Cycling 1:27:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of the Freer Gallery to see Amir Naderi's "Water, Wind, Dust".

Note

It seems the USGS has added 1/9 arc second NED data for Baltimore City and Baltimore County to the Seamless Data Distribution Service. I'd rather have PG County and/or Montgomery (hopefully coming next) but still nice.

Running 7:27 [1]

Warmup/cooldown.

Form exercises 40:49 [4]

Silly walks and 23 to 24 minutes of Billat intervals (30 seconds running at about VO2max speed, 30 seconds slow, repeat).

Thursday Jun 18, 2009 #

Silly walks, 8x100m strides, 3 bounding passes up gentle uphill, and one long uphill sprint.

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Round trip downtown to see an early colour film at the NGA and take in the first part of their weekly classical music concert. Walked around the Gay Pride Festival briefly too.

Saturday Jun 13, 2009 #

Cycling 1:10:00 [3]

Cycling from Branch Avenue Metro to Patuxent. It seemed to be groundhog season - I saw four live ones and one roadkilled as I rode. Also, a young fox as I passed through Rosaryville.

Running 3:59:33 [1]

Slow jog with occasional walking looking for wavyleaf basketgrass at Patuxent. Saw a far bit of Japanese stiltgrass but none of my quarry. Also startled three fawns, one from only about 2 meters in front of me, and encountered 3 box turtles.

Cycling 1:20:00 [2]

Slower bike ride back to Branch Avenue.

Sunday Jun 7, 2009 #

Orienteering race 44:53 [4] 6.8 km (6:36 / km)

QOC Beer chase - first, just over a minute ahead of Eddie, who was just over a minute ahead of Peter Bjorgul. People were pretty bunched together through 5 controls on the first loop, though I might have got away on the leg from 3 to 4 if I hadn't messed up 4 and let the pack catch back up. From 5, Eddie and I exited together to start the long leg but he then took a line somewhat more to the right and apparently drifted even more to the right than he'd intended. He said he could see me punching control 6 as he was climbing up towards it. Peter was also in view as I exited that control. After that, I saw no one other than Eddie approaching the third last control of the last loop, since my route choice to the next control made that a big dogleg. Warm but nowhere near as oppressively so as the last time we held the Chase at McKeldin.

Saturday Jun 6, 2009 #

Note

Invasive plant removal at Greenbelt (part of their National Trails Day event - http://www.nps.gov/ncr/customcf/apps/eventcalendar...). Spent the time uprooting "bindweed" aka "mile-a-minute weed" (proper name unknown to me). Passed through Calvert Road Park on the way to the Metro and saw the same plant running rampant over fifty meters or so of forest border.

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

Cycling so far today between home, Metro stations and Greenbelt Park. Then to Silver Spring by way of a Safeway and both TPSS locations. Saw Soylent Green at the AFI then home.

Friday Jun 5, 2009 #

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]

Rainy bike ride to work. Had planned on going to the pool for a long DWR session but my body vetoed that by sleeping through both the alarms I had set.

Granted conditions were not identical to my midday ride to work on Wednesday but the perceived effort level was only slightly less. I'm continually surprised at how much difference waiting a few hours after waking makes in how fast I do this ride. Is this purely a function of not having had time to digest my breakfast (if any - sometimes I don't eat, at least not much, until I get to work) or is there something else at work that would have implications for preparing for early morning races?

Cycling to the Freer Gallery to see Battleship Potemkin and home afterwards was pretty dry.

Core exercises 10:00 [4]

Thursday Jun 4, 2009 #

Cycling 1:08:00 [3]

Cycling to work by way of the aquatic center. Home by way of PCRM and the Cleveland Park Library.

Deep Water Running 15:00 [5]

4 x not quite 4 min intervals

Swimming 8:00 [1]

Swimming rests between intervals.

Wednesday Jun 3, 2009 #

Cycling 26:00 [4]

Time somewhat approximate since my stopwatch managed to stop itself briefly but I'm not sure how briefly. I heard a beep but then looked down to see it saying I was only just over two and a half minutes out of my front door, which seemed implausibly low if it had only just stopped itself.

Cycling 32:00 [3]

Home by way of the aquatic center.

Swimming 12:00 [2]

An intended long workout cut short by DCPRs policy of closing indoor swimming pools during thunderstorms and for 30 minutes after the last observed lightning.

Core exercises 10:00 [4]

Tuesday Jun 2, 2009 #

Cycling 1:02:00 [3]

Cycling to work. Home by way of the aquatic center.

Deep Water Running 1:48:00 [2]

More of the avant garde, including John Cage, Aaron Copland almost getting dragged in front of HUAC, etc.

Monday Jun 1, 2009 #

Cycling 32:00 [3]

Cycling home by way of the aquatic center.

Swimming 1:43:00 [2]

Flutterkicking to the end of German music during WWII and into the birth of the postwar avant-garde... just occurred to me to check, "vanguard" is derived from this but apparently it came from Old French a long time ago rather than from more recent use of the French form in cultural contexts.
