RMOC Bear Creek Lake. Green Course. Its a crazy coincidence that I got exactly the same time, to the second, as I did last week. 1:29:02. Runners course, generally good for me, but a little less good this time because my legs were sore to begin with after a tough training/racing day yesterday.
No bearings, no pace counting, wasn't much as far as contours, very open, stayed on roads and trails when feasible so I could run fast.
Start-1: I ran 1.26 miles to get to this one. Trail around lake and around fence. Then I clambered down some thick growth through a creek up to the control. I think I should have gone around the thick bushes and down a less steep section since it was pretty much a tumble, but I was catching up to another guy going for the same control at that point and just followed him in. *Fastest split
1-2: Quick and easy. Back to the trail and then found control between two lines of trees. *Fastest split
2-3: Ugh, this was by far my worst relative to everyone else (7x fastest split, luckily it was still 11min). This was the shortest distance between controls on the course. Since the vegetation boundary was so clear between 1 and 2, I decided against taking much of a bearing and followed the sections of clearing vs green, but it didn't work. My gps trail shows me coming really really close to it twice without finding it before I finally did on the third pass through the area. In hindsight, I should have just taken a careful bearing and walked.
3-4: Also pretty bad (2x fastest split). Came out from 3 across a steam then up to a trail. I'm not sure what I was thinking (or not thinking) but I either didn't register that I hit the dirt road, not the paved road or simply turned the wrong way on the trail and went on a rather long detour around the campground (didn't quite figure out what had happened until I was already too far to make it worth going back the right way and wasn't confident enough to cut through).
4-5: Back up to the road and then back down to the control when I saw a little building. Didn't notice another trail that would have been more direct, and did not take another trail turnoff that would have cut my route shorter, but I was able to run pretty fast most of the way.
5-6: Confidence issue here. I got up to the trail and cut across to another trail. I blew by my intended turn and then I simply lost confidence that I was where I thought I was so I stopped for a good minute or two to figure out where I was. It turns out that I was indeed exactly where I thought I was. Used vegetation boundaries and stayed on yellow and went around the green.
6-7: Got on trail and stayed on it. A quick one. *Fastest split
7-8: My 3rd bad on (2x fastest split). I had a little trouble finding this one. It was in a less open area which tends to be a problem for me. (3 was like this too) I should have stopped and taken a careful bearing from the nearest known spot (bend in trail or exercise post) but I just charged into the undergrowth like a maniac and wandered around until I found it.
8-9: Bad route choice here. I battled through some green to get back to the trail, but I should have stayed in the little gully until it opened up and got closer to the trail. From the map symbol, I was expecting the control to be behind a live tree, but it was behind a big dead one, so that slowed me down just a little as I was looking for it.
9-10: Long run on trails but certainly not my best work. Felt tired and dehydrated (didn't bring or drink any water on course, stupid), but still, those running controls are generally good for me.
10-Finish. Sprint on in.
