spiked:8/12c

Red course for the first day of the RMOC A-meet. OK run, had problems on 2, 6, and 10, but felt fast running the open legs to 7-8-9. We will see, once the splits are posted. My own were: 112 535 204 329 604 418 934 409 325 1035 858 228 43

Warmup walk on S part of Rattlesnake Hill.
10 AM

Orienteering race 39:06 [4] *** 6.1 km (6:25 / km) +130m 5:48 / km
spiked:10/10c

Daze 4 at Pitcher Hill. Good run on an open, fast course. Was slow into #1, in top 5 still though. Had a good leg 4-5 which let me catch up to John and open a gap on Jan and Ted. The rest of the course was mostly open running, so all I had to do was keep going and not boom anything. Ended up 3rd behind John and Eric.

Also took splits for the first time in a while:

Orienteering 22:00 [2] 2.0 km (11:00 / km) +40m 10:00 / km

Warmup on the north half of Rattlesnake Hill training map. Ran into a bull moose (well, not literally) on the way to #9, so skipped that one and did 10-16. I've been having bad luck with ungulates lately.
10 AM

Orienteering race 52:59 [4] *** 5.9 km (8:59 / km) +190m 7:44 / km
spiked:14/23c

One Cowboy Relay at the rock-filled Gates of AMT Hell map. Blew the first and second loops with bad navigation in the rocks, third and fourth loops were better, as was the fifth. Still, I ran fast enough to find myself competing with Kevin, Jan, and Ted for places 3-6. Ended up in 5th overall, pretty good considering how shaky I felt on the navigation.

My loop order was D-C-A-B-Z (I think). As usual, click on the maps for full size.

5 PM

MTB (technical) 43:15 [3] 6.88 mi (9.5 mph) +190m

Another ride to the top of Pole Mountain and then back down.

Orienteering race 47:40 [4] *** 5.5 km (8:40 / km) +220m 7:13 / km
spiked:6/10c

Daze 2 at Middle Crow's Toe. The first four were long legs on the open spurs west of the road, and then we crossed back to the Toe for detailed rock terrain. The change messed me up and I made mistakes on 6, 7 and 10. However, I wasn't the only one to make mistakes, and only slipped one place to 4th. Ted Good had a clean run through the rocks which enabled him to take over 3rd. Jan passed me on the way to 6 but made his own mistake on 9-10. Splits really would have been fun for this one.

Orienteering 58:22 [2] *** 5.26 km (11:06 / km) +140m 9:48 / km
spiked:5/7c

First half of Rattlesnake Hill training map. High noon and it was hot out, so I walked the course and picked off features. Originally I was going to try straight-lining the legs, but a herd of cows started to get alarmed by my presence near 1 and 2, and forced me to take a bit of a detour. The rest of it was pretty good, but I did start to feel the heat, and my shins started to really get irritated by the sage.

Orienteering race 45:58 [4] *** 5.7 km (8:04 / km) +200m 6:52 / km
spiked:9/10c

Daze 1 on a new map "Moose Outlet". I jumped out in front with John Goodwin, and true to the name, we startled a moose on way from 2 to 3. John gapped me on 8-9, but I kept it up for a comfortable 2nd. Kevin had third, but according to him it was intentional, so we could "flush out any moose or bear" :)

MTB (technical) 1:00:49 [3] *** 9.09 mi (9.0 mph)

A short bike on the Pole Mountain trails - not too long because I didn't want to cash my legs. The descent on Lower UW and Middle Aspen deserves some helmet cam, so I'll be back for at least that.

Running (trail) 1:45:20 [3] 7.71 mi (13:40 / mi) +490m 11:25 / mi

Trail run/walk from Sylvan Lake to Harney Peak to Little Devils Tower. Great view of Cathedral Spires from trail #4.
5 PM

Terrain Running (no map) 41:44 [2] 1.53 mi (27:17 / mi) +80m 23:28 / mi

Rambling around at the top of Powder River pass. Climbed to a subsidiary peak and noticed some oddly placed rocks. Behind them was a metal box about the size of a loaf of bread. Thinking it was a geocache, I unscrewed the lid. It was not.
