A morning run in Jockey Hollow before heading south for the weekend. It was hot, hot, hot...and sticky. By the time I was finished, I was sweating as much as nadim and Sam Listwak, combined...and that's a lot of sweat!

I finally found the river trail through the Black River WMA! And it was a great place to try mountain biking again, which worked out much better than my foray yesterday on my road bike. This trail is very similar to the C&O Canal...straight and flat, surrounded by woods. The Black River along this stretch should more aptly be called the Black Linear Swamp, but it was still pretty.

My left knee (fka "the good one") has been the troublesome knee while biking. I think scar tissue has built up in there again, causing the pain. During the ride this morning, it hurt a lot in the beginning, but then I could hear popping and cracking in there, almost like I was breaking up some scar tissue with the bending motion. (The therapists actually did this same thing in PT.) The second half of the ride felt much better. I guess I need to keep doing this to keep that knee more flexible.

Note

I attempted to go for a bike ride this morning to test things out before attempting something a little more intense. And, it was a dismal failure. I guess riding on a stationary bike at the gym is not quite the same. The saddest part, though, was that it was my "good" knee that hurt the most and had the most difficulty making full revolutions. Bummer.

On a side note, I had a momentary lapse of spelling while writing this entry, and wasn't sure if I meant "stationary" or "stationery." So, I Googled "stationary," and there were all entries related to writing paper. So I thought, "Hmm, I guess I had that wrong," and then Googled "stationery," which *also* had all entries related to writing paper. Not very helpful. So, I used the trusty Dictionary.com which set me straight. This was all after discovering that I do not have one dictionary in my house.

I ran on some different trails at Jockey Hollow, with part of the way over on the Jockey Hollow/Lewis Morris border. Along this side, there appeared to have begun some barberry eradication activities. First, I ran past a fenced-in enclosure, with a sign on it that explained that it was a scientific look at the natural forest growth here, before the barberry and deer invasions. I could see where parts of the 8' tall fence were crumpled at the top, apparently where the deer were trying to get to the luscious tasting vegetation.

Right past this enclosure was an entire hillside of browned barberry. The corners of the eradication area were marked with flagging ribbon. Soon after that, I came upon another massive area of dying barberry. It was a marvelous sight!

When I was finished running, I went in to the Visitor Center to get my park stamp. I also found an entire basket of Jockey Hollow o-maps for sale! So I bought 2 since, ironically enough, I haven't had any Jockey Hollow maps to run with since I moved here.
