Stomp Sprint. Felt OK the first part of the course, but then made a 45 sec mistake in the ravine. Struggled to push any pace after this. Still a bit of a runny nose and lingering effects from the cold I caught this week.

Stomp Middle. Was completely puzzled attacking the 2nd control. Was standing on a little form-line hill in a clearing with a re-entrant on the left, but there was nothing on the map, just a straight hill. The control was supposed to be in a re-entrant, roughly in the area I was. Finally decided to go up a little higher and then found it... after that really good until the 11th, when I made a rookie mistake. I saw the flag across a march so stopped reading the map, ran around the flooded march and up to the control... but it was not my code. Probably dropped another minute there at least. Otherwise fantastic terrain and a sprinty short middle which was really fun. Would have been happier with 27 min, but not really much to do at 2 with a completely unmapped feature.

(sick)

A and O were both pretty sick last week, so I was just waiting to catch it and wave goodbye to Sage Stomp. Of course, started to feel it coming on Monday and have a stuffed up nose and feeling under the weather. However, it seems to be a milder version than what A and O had. No fever or sore throat or headache, so maybe it will be a short one...

Went for a very easy run without any of the usual ravine climbs. Did not feel great with a dripping nose, but not horrible either. If it does not get worse should be able to run the middle at least fairly well.

Summer warm evening!

WJR at McCartney. Mass start with two different forked courses. Long trail run to the first control with a big pack, which quickly fell apart at the forked first control. On the long trail run up to 2, was behind Lehel, Russell, Gilles and Adam. On the way to 3 did not see where Lehel and Russell went, but was able to catch up to Adam and Gilles on a smart micro-route choice in the trails. Was leading the way into 3. We split up on the way to 4, but rejoined Gilles at the control. Adam had the longer fork here and disappeared. Gilles and I nailed 5 and then ran hard on the long trail to 6. Went straight to 7 through the creek and came up too far to the right. I corrected left, but Gilles went even further right and was gone. When I punched 7, I heard some branches breaking and looking back I saw Adam again. Pushed as hard as I could to 8 and 9 and could see him 50 meters behind me. Got 10 no problem, but lost time scrambling down the cliff and Adam was right behind me. However, he had a slightly different fork (which I didn't realize) and I never saw him on the long trail run to the finish.

Really fun race!
