Orienteering race 20:29 [4] 2.43 mi (8:26 / mi) +11m 8:19 / mi

US Sprint Championships - Genesee Valley Park

That didn't really go the way I wanted it too. I was unhappy with the mapping and printing, but it really only effected me on 15 where the guardrail that continued after the bridge wasn't mapped. I just saw uncrossable fence on the map, and ran to the end of it and around it, instead of trying to figure out where they decided it was crossable, and stopped mapping it. There is no excuse for the inconsistencies and non standardness of that map though.

I don't think the mapper really gets the concept of a sprint map, and what the symbolization is supposed to mean to people moving at speed in terms of the details that are required (guardrails or impediments that will break my stride) vs details that are not needed (the difference between all the tree types, canopy sizes, and various statue/swing/bleechers etc symbols).

Hiking 2:00:00 [1]

Down in Letchworth scoping out the setup for the weekend, and testing radios. We were trying to get enough repeaters to get the remote finish online back to the arena, but the terrain just wasn't cooperating, and it would have taken a ridiculous amount of hardware. Nice day to be out in the woods though, so no complaints.

Excited for tomorrow. Lets see what a couple of months of training can do.

Running 1:09:56 [3] 7.17 mi (9:45 / mi) +26m 9:39 / mi

Running along the canal path into the village and back. I ran into my high school cross country coach out running with the team in the village.

Note

Laptop refuses to recognize its battery anymore. Time to schedule a genius bar visit to get a new one. The last one the failed slowly started to get worse and worse until I only had a few minutes of life. This one was fine until a week ago when it would just refuse to work sometimes, and now just flashes at me saying it has failed and needs replacement. I only seem to get a 2 year lifespan out of batteries, but I do use them heavily.

Note

Finishing of the ROC bibs. InDesign really didn't like the 430 page pdf export.

Lots of packing. How do I need this much stuff? I don't need this much stuff, but what if we really need that extra USB cable and I didn't pack it?

Tomorrow I pick up the bibs, buy some more mylar, drive across the state, do some mapping until it gets dark, then drive home to Rochester.

Note

I was finally able to solve my weird splits printing issue today. I have a zebra label printer that I use to print splits onto label stock, so that then you can stick your splits to the back of your map. This works great most of the time, but sometimes will start printing with random line wrap issues, part of the sheet starts half way across and then wraps back to the left side of the page. The printer works fine on another computer, but on my main laptop does this 50% of the time. I had tried it under both XP and windows 7, OE2003 and OE2010. What I was able to trace it to today was the usb hub I've been using. My laptop only has 2 usb ports, so if I want the printer, download station and my phone plugged in, then I use a hub. With the hub I see the printing issue 50% of the time, without the hub it never happens.

Picking up controls.

My compass was lying to me, so I ignored it. Turns out it wasn't lying.
