Orienteering race (O-Cup 6) 1:39:28 [4] 12.0 km (8:17 / km)
Happy to be out and participate in my 6th OCup for the season. Great work by the STARS, including Tiny & the Funderstorms (sounds like a great band name). Convinced Mrs. W & the kids to come do the junior course.
House guests the night before and a clock change meant a late start and a hurried drive out to Cambridge.
Checked in and got the map, but between getting changed and organizing the rest of the family, I never had the chance to really review and plan my route. Frantically tried while standing at the start to eavesdrop on other route plans, but I finally decided to get to 3 and see where the crowd was headed. Started with h-H, then backtrack to g-G at the bottom. Next did b-B up the road, over to E-e back down, over to c-C. Was debating F-f to take me back west to exit the box, but decided A-a would do the same thing and use more of the major trail. I was shuffling along well at my slow pace and it was really cool seeing everyone crisscrossing the area, each following their own route. Saw some people multiple times.
Enroute to a, I was feeling pretty good as my route seemed okay and my nav to CPs had been good and I was just about finished the box. Of course, that should signal me that I'm due for a mental error.
Finished my last dogbone at CPa and quick glance told me I had only 6-7-8-9 and I was home. I ran into Mr Gally enroute to 6 and followed him around the lake. Went to punch 6 and thought to myself that I remembered doing CP3 and then entering the box. Hmmm. What happened to 4 & 5? Ugh. Yet another brain cramp. Checked the watch and realized I had time and had best go back and correct my error.
Rather frustrated with myself, so I got rather lazy coming back to 4. Tons of windy trails around here, so I headed in the general direction and hoped I'd hit it. Realized the stupidity of this and tried to relocate, only to find a checkpoint. Too bad it was d, not 4. Decide to stop messing around and go bearing over to 4 and then to 5 and run BACK to 6. On to the finish and feeling dumb at yet another stupid mental error. As always, I do well finding the CP's I'm looking for, just not so well finding the ones I'm not looking for.
Mrs. W and the kids had fun, although she tried to actually use her compass to figure out where they were, forget to line up the house, and promptly went down the wrong trail. She figured it out and they were happily hanging out at the finish line when I arrived in 32nd place. I'll take it. Would've liked to hang out and visit, but we had a lunch invite at a friend's farm 20 min south.
My first full season of O-Cup and I loved it. Great way to get us out and active. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen and see you next season.
