What did I say about running and working a meet? Dumb idea. Forgot HRM again.

1. Very cautious. Feel like start was too far down trail and was more in the reentrant than on the spur. Easy nav by marsh, though.

2. Cautious again, but bare rock was easy.

3. Straight through green.

4. Very hard time seeing difference between light green and gray on the map. Missed and went back around to try again picking off individual rocks.

5. Spooked by difficulty in seeing gray. Went in the white which was too slow. Slight overshoot, but OK.

6. This was good. Punched through band of rock and followed lower edge.

7. Safe route downhill, but should have angled south more.

8. Lost focus taking Gu. Thoguht I knew where was and should have been fine, but missed control first time around and when I came back out, spotted the road uphill which I just could not figure out on the map. In hindsight, two black lines that looked like rocks were the road. Major dithering before plunging back in to the control. Should have seen it the first time.

9. Easy on bearing, but really pissed off by 8.

10. Easy along creek, but really pissed off by 8.

11. Didn't see beige in the green and was confused. Kept going and found it OK.

12. Forced off the line to the north by the green, but OK.

13. Straight and easy. Just to the left of the hill.

14. Utterly confused by the spectator control and the other mini-road on the map. Went right to the control and didn't punch. BL was watching and must have wondered what the heck I was doing. Wandered off and came back when I finally figured it out.

15. Straight but slow.

16. Straight but slow.

17. Straight but slow. Confused by the imperceptible beige.

18. Straight but very slow. Seemed too far.

F. Ugh.

Worst weekend's orienteering in a very long time.

Second in a trio of Terrible Runs. Didn't I say to never run and work a meet?

Arrived at the map line with my beeper going. Forgot HRM and too late to go back. Forgot to leave my cap behind, left it at the starter table.

Grabbed my map and went.

1. Atrocious. Idea was OK, but I should have checked the small path better - especially after cutting the corner. Went off into left field mistaking ditch after ditch. Reset to the road and found it pretty quickly, but not very precisely.

2. Wobbled through the green to the road, then along to attackpoint at edge of clearing on road. Tried to spot form line topography and utterly failed. When I realized I was going east and downhill I turned dead north with the hope of finding the northern slope and luckily hit the control.

3. Short and clean.

4. Crap again. Went right by it. Stopped at the rootstock and came back.

5. Took the road to the north and planned to pick up veg boundary and contour to marsh. Felt that the marshes were very dry, but realized there was some risk. A bit slow crossing, but pretty good route. Feeling a bit better. Bumped into GL.

6. GL took off like a shot on the trail, but we met at the control.

7. Through spectator chute. Met GL at control. Huh?

8. Long leg parallel to river. Took easy path along riverbank. Met GL again at powerline. Ran together to creek, then GL ran low and I ran high. GL ran into muck and had to come high, passing again at 11 - which was nice to scope out. Was a little too far east when spotted 8 and GL came in from west and was well away before I got to 8.

9. Decided to run along south side of creek. Lots of debris. Checked of reentrants on the south side. Planned to go directly east up reentrant, checking hilltop to the south, then cross reentrant to find rootstock. Crossed a little to the north.

10.Directly north then spike.

11. Decide to head uphill to road. Somehow headed east instead of north, but quickly corrected. Ran off the end of the road onto the trail and off the end of the trail into the green. Recognized where I was and turned north to the control. Passed GL without seeing him on this leg.

12. Rough compass to the powerline corner. Contoured in to control.

13. Trail-parking lot-trail then cut corner to control.

F. Long run in.

First in a trio of Terrible Runs. Never run and work a meet.

Was tying my laces when the beeper went. Cataloging just successes and failures...

3. Failed to read may properly and went back around building instead of straight south. Even got disorientated in parking lot.

4. Should have exited on south side.

5. Trapped in blind alley suspecting double bluff. Should have read control description.

12. Took better route choice around top of green.

16. Should have contoured from bottom of steps.

F. Pretty quick on the run in.
