Orienteering race 1:57:01 [5] 10.1 km (11:35 / km)

Jukola Relay - Leg 6 - BOK 2

Started off taking the run out pretty steady and trying to carefully check out number 1 as so many people had messed this one up.... oooops!! totally blew it as missed control first time, panicked, tried to relocate 3 times before eventually calming down and relocating on path and going very slowly into control (lost 20-22 mins!!!!)...... first control took 30 minutes! Fastes were taking 7 mins, Ben took 8:30......

After number 1 I settled down and actually was going pretty well all the way through to 14.... at times I was getting frustrated by running in groups, so I always tried to get to front and do my own thing, which worked pretty well and had some good splits...

On long leg (14-15) I found myself almost alone quite a bit and it was obvious I had not taken a very good route.... I had the company of a complete t****r who was running out in the forest without a map and decided to follow random runners at times. He was literally running 5 feet behind me and when I was unsure where I was and stopped to look at map he was looking over my shoulder..... I was ready to turn around and hit him..... eventually found the big lake and went in from there with this guy still following along with another guy who seemed to stop every 100 metres or so to ask someone where he was!!! Ended up too far north punched no.91, thinking that was what I was looking for, but realised immediately it was 90.... ended up overshooting and hitting taped out of bounds area about 250m beyond control, went back via 16 and straight in to 15 so knew route back to 16... probably lost 10 minutes on this one..

After that reasonably clean again....

Started off in 799 place

Frustrating run in someways, as two big mistakes let down an otherwise pretty good run. Enjoyed my first Scandi experience and with 1650 teams this was one awesome event!! Both mistakes were a result of being put off by what was going on around me and not concentrating properly on my own thing.... live and learn

Team finished 784th, which after a slow start turned out reasonable. Charles and Alan in particular had good runs and made up for some less good runs by others.

Event: Jukola 2012

Orienteering 35:00 [2] 3.0 km (11:40 / km)

Went for a morning loosener around the model area map as was feeling pretty stiff. My right heel was hurting a bit as I had bruised it on a rock on Friday..

Very scrappy and parts of the area were pretty grotty.........

Spent afternoon trying to find shade to watch Venla

Orienteering 1:15:00 [3]

Traveled out to Helsinki very early in morning, then after setting camp went off for a bit of training... did a 5km course taking it slowly and trying to get in to map and terrain as this was my first Scandanavian experience..... bit scrappy then lost total contact with map on the long leg and just had to go on a bearing towards road, luckily hit stream where it was crossed by path quite far north of where I should have been......

Orienteering 45:00 [3]

Having not been happy with first bit of training I decided to have another go after we had been lounging about in the very warm sun by a lake :-)

Just did 5 controls, mostly ok, but still can't work out just what happened on no. 2 - I was carefully checking off features... hit a path as planned turned right and then off to left, but somehow came back on to path I thought I'd crossed from the side I should have hit it originally!!!!

SWOC Summer Informal - Blorenge

Took it easy as it was pretty tussocky and rocky and didn't want any injuries prior to Jukola!!! Still made loads of mistakes (best improve my compass work prior to Sunday!)..... some iffy parts of map, very low hanging (lactually laid on floor) of controls meant you needed to be accurate!!

Didn't feel that sprightly, but probablty because it was first run for over a week and felt a ittle bit hay fevery
