Orienteering - Urban race (Croeso Day 6) 40:49 [4] 6.81 km (6:00 / km) +175m 5:19 / km
slept:5.0 weight:69.8kg shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Urban race around Aberystwyth University. 4.8km course.

Messed up 1 (missed the path junction so went off in the wrong direction) and 2 (didn't see the patch of open very quickly) but things started to pick up after that.

Clean all the way from 3 until leaving 22 (including spotting the only way around to 20). Hesitated on way to 23 and then changed route so probably lost a bit of time. Walked half the hill to 24. 27 very hidden so overshot.

Was aiming to do sub-40 but it seems that the times were generally slow on my course. At least I managed to punch all the controls and hold off Alan Honey again...

Orienteering race (Croeso Day 5) 1:04:15 [4] 8.12 km (7:55 / km) +275m 6:46 / km

Day 5 at Teifi Pools. 7.0km course.

Knew today would be much better as was running in my Westbury vest. Clean 1-4 but slow into 1 and all the way to 2. Think one of the fence crossing points was not taped and I forget that it wasn't overprinted red so went along it until I found a taped crossing. was on the wrong blob by 5, cost me 30s or so but was v slow anyway.

Saw best route 6-7 but didn't take it, instead stayed along the side of the big lake then went due south. May have cost me a couple of minutes but it was still fun and fairly quick. Was with Simon Brandford all the way for the second long leg 8-9. Roughly contoured but ended up above the big crag just SE of the control - was fairly easy to work from it. May have lost another 30s or so.

Rest fairly straightforward although was a bit too low into 12. Very happy with the run today, even if David Hunt, Mark Burley and Alan Honey (just) all beat me.

Orienteering race (Croeso Day 4) 1:13:39 [5] 8.51 km (8:39 / km) +250m 7:33 / km
slept:6.5 weight:69.3kg shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Croeso Day 4 at Teifi Pools. 6.9km course.

Was on parking duty (dealt with 13 cars in 2.5 hours...) at the very bottom of the hill so had a good 4.5km with 300-400m climb up to the start.

Struggled with heat and tiredness after no 1. Messed up 2 fairly badly (+4 mins) by working off the wrong lump on the other side of the fence. Did 3-4-5 quite well and was still enjoying the navigation to 6 despite going the wrong way for a bit!

Long leg to 7 - took a very up and down route with lots and lots and lots of climb. Went up the hill with Pat McLeod but made a parallel error because I got confused as to where we crossed a fence. Realised my mistake when I came across another fence... Didn't know whether it was crossable (had crossing points but no overprint) so went through the gap between it and the uncrossable marsh. Still had a good 300 yards to get to the control afterwards... 22:16 for a 2km leg, probably lost another 4 or 5 mins as most of it was just going slowly.

8-9-10-11 all good and fairly clean. Didn't see 12 on the map at all (leg 11-12-13 in a perfect straight line) so ran pretty much straight past it. Realised mistake at 13 but as 12 was by then 600 yards behind me didn't go back for it. Didn't try very hard for the end.

Bit annoyed with the mispunch but time would have been quite uncompetitive anyway - only made about 10 mins of mistakes but was a good 20 minutes off the lead. Now I know that some of the lakes are higher than the surrounding ground I will hopefully know how to avoid some of the climb tomorrow.

Exploring 6 of the 7 Elan Valley dams. Often regretted parking my car near the top and then going down the bottom to take photos... Pleased to have made the effort to find what is left of Nant y Gro.

Running (Jog to start) 7:30 [2] 1.4 km (5:21 / km) +45m 4:37 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Was running late so jogged half the route to the start. Walked the last 800m (which had 110m climb...) Tired by the time I got up there.

Orienteering race (Croeso Day 3) 47:25 [3] 4.23 km (11:13 / km) +165m 9:23 / km
slept:6.0 weight:69.4kg shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Day 3 at Hafod. 3.1km middle course.

Generally unpleasant for running - far too hot, sunlight reflected off map, couldn't run because of either furrows, branches/brambles to trip over or big stones.

Got a bit confused at 4 as just south of the control (c.20m) there was a stake but without a kite, number or punch on it and wondered if it had been vandalised. Lost about 5 mins on number 6 because I stupidly thought that the control description of "veg. boundary, east corner, outside" would mean that the control would be on the corner of the veg boundary. It was on a different bit of a veg boundary (not a corner), not visible from the correct position so I was lucky to find a Canadian who kindly told me where she found it.

Think the vegetation just up the hill from 12 wasn't mapped right - went very slowly as wasn't sure I was going the right way because of this. no option bit to sit down and slide down the hill to 13, unhappy with contours near 15 but control was fairly easy to find. Couldn't read the map well into 16 so had to go through the bushes. Didn't find the right point of the fence to cross from 17-18 so went through the wide open gate (overprinted with the uncrossable line). Bit slow into 20.

Orienteering race (Croeso Day 2) 51:10 [4] 7.23 km (7:05 / km) +180m 6:18 / km
slept:6.0 weight:70.3kg shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (1)

Day 2 at Foel Goch. 6.4km course.

Navigation was much cleaner than yesterday but still made small misses on 1 (20-30s) and 2. Bigger mistake on 7 as was 200 yards or so too far north - relocated from the fence.

8-9 contoured a little bit around the top, otherwise kept to the straight line. 9-10 got caught by a steep descent through very long grass so lost a little bit, then 30s mistake on 11 - relocated from cairn. Thought I was at 12 so was about to head due west when somebody else started running south and that made me check again.

Rest of the run all clean. Should hope for some fairly quick splits on the last few. Pleased to have beaten Mark Burley, David Hunt, Alan Honey and Tim Longley today - would like to think there may be some ranking points to be had.

Orienteering race (Croeso Day 1) 1:12:08 [5] 8.23 km (8:46 / km) +265m 7:33 / km

Gwanas - 6.9km course with 245m climb.

Despite the lack of painkillers and poor running form seemed to start out fairly well and consistently moving. Then came leg 4-5 - 150m but with with 15 contour lines and that was a very slow walk. Tired me out for the long leg 5-6 where I was bang on for half but drifted off course toward the end. Spent a lot of time trying to line up features before coming across my control 10 - 400m away. Lost probably 6-7 mins on this. 7,8,9 all clean and fairly quick but ballsed up 10 by thinking it would be easy to remember where I went before (1-2 mins).

Was too high at 12 - so was everybody else. Didn't do much navigation for long leg to 13 - just aimed for the edge of the trees and got the control bang on. Contouring not fun for ankle though. Far far too high at 16, not helped by me looking for the wrong number!

Was quite quick and clean toward the end. Picked up the pace from the penultimate control. Finished about 8 mins down on Alan Honey, 4 on Tim L and David Hunt, 8 minutes up on Mark Burley. Was hoping for about 72; pleased to have beaten Andy Stott by 2s!
