orienteering race (Billygoat!) 1:51:00 [3]
I do love the Billygoat! Had a pretty sound run except for one phenomenally lousy route following what could have been just a minor error. But I'll have stories to tell about running through the quaking bog forever. Glad Ben P. was there with me (though I'm sure he wishes he had stuck with his dad and not me!) in case I got stuck. Only went in as far as my chest once, and their was a nice tree there to use to haul myself out. And I was greatly relieved to find that at least a half dozen other souls thought that a solid black line really did mean a road.
The rest was pretty smooth, with a few minor errors in the circles. Went to the northern #5, then skipped 7. In retrospect I think 15 was the better skip, but 7 was reasonable. A little low and to the northeast on 11, and distracted by a very large boulder marked as a normal size ... but after a short pause I ignored the boulder and used the contours, which was a much better plan. Lost about a minute I guess. Took the long way around on the trails to 13 as I was running well on trails and slow in the woods. Then the big whoops on 15, thinking I shouldn't go to close to the houses, when in fact it is an access road, not a driveway. It's clear now, but wasn't at the time to my tired brain. Sorry Ben!
Clean for a few legs, then a little low on 20, but quickly fixed. Found a line mostly through white down the hill from 20 and was clean for the rest. Ben was very polite and didn't pass me at the finish, though I'm sure he could have! I'm sure next year he'll be miles ahead.
Great course, great woods, great weather. Definitely a nice mother's day.
