Orienteering on nice day at Hay Creek. Had a nice run except for control #5, where I made a doozy of a mistake and took over 34 minutes on what should have been a 10 minute control. When I get the chance to Route Gadget this, I'll be doing some guessing, and watchers will be doing some laughing. Lost touch with the map, guessed wrong three times - you name it. Energy level good, anyway.

Really a map & compass exercise in the woods. Nice day.

Note

Four hours spent on sailboat, LARKE. Move, mast up, start cleanup and so forth. Thus begins the season(s) of sailing, fishing, yard work, house painting, working out, orienteering. Essentially doing lots of stuff, nothing really well. Thank God I don't have to put work in the mix.

There's a major double tree down affecting distance and even climb. I toyed with extending the distance and ended up simply removing 30 seconds from my time. HughMac4 can observe/comment/estimate, etc.

Governor Dick is always a challenge for me somehow. I orienteered well for seven of ten controls - then came #8, a very long (1.5km) leg. I'd been peeking at it off and on from the start, knowing I often have difficulty with extra long legs. So I made a really bad decision on attacking the leg, then didn't even accomplish that. My license to orienteer was temporarily revoked, as I took almost 23 minutes on that control. It was revoked again near the finish, as I chose to wander through some truly difficult vegetation (warned about by course setter). I'm appealing the permanent revocation, hoping for a mere suspension until next week. Hopefully my chauffeur will understand why I needed to avoid public humiliation at the "Victory" Brewery on the way home. "Victory"! What victory?
And West Point's coming up. Oh dear. And Sandy F. turned down the "generous" offer to course control the Brown Courses there. Who knows what we'll experience.
