Orienteering race (Nationals relay) 1:07:55 [4]

shocker!! Quite a few really, really bad legs.

You'd think fences would help but not in my case

Was stopping short of controls, over shooting, going left, going right, even stuffed up the pivot control on the third time there

Orienteering race (Nationals long) 1:13:58 [4]

Pretty poor start - lost ~9 minutes on the first 4 controls. Even after that I was rather erratic with fairly slow splits.

Was feeling tired and brain was obviously not working at all well.

Was also having quite a bit of difficulty reading the contours with all of the overprinted black - not really a problem with the map, just me dealing with it.

Orienteering race (Nationals Middle) 46:22 [5] 2.7 km (17:10 / km) +195m 12:37 / km

Legs a bit sore from yesterday. A reasonable run given the steepness of the hills. Didn't feel that I was doing at all well however looking at winsplits I was in 4th at #11...

8: Didn't see taped fence at spectator control(!) so went right through gate. Faffed a bout for a bit in reentrants around the stream junction before realising that I needed to go downstream a little more

9: Went around spur when really should have taken direct route. -20s

10: Went down wrong reentrant, turned right, where are the cliffs?? Quickly realised what I'd done and headed for the next reentrant, much better! -30-40s

11: Long leg. Went to right of large hill however even though it was largely mapped white I seemed to find all of the felled trees!! Ended up being pushed too far right but not a major prob. Over open area, beside hill, down reentrant to stream. Map showed 2 clearings on left of stream so thought I'd connect those and try to avoid the worst of the light green. Unfortunately there was dark green connecting the clearings underneath the north lines that I hadn't noticed. Ended up being forced up through the green over a cliff and down again. To make it worse the light green around stream was perfectly runnable, d'oh!! Lost quite a few minutes and 4 places :-(

14: Couldn't see any good route choice here - maybe going left to stream bend however there were cliffs and green so in the end decided to to go pretty straight. Ended up OK except for some supplejack and of course the steepness of the hill to climb up

Orienteering race (Nationals Sprint) 19:19 [5] 2.2 km (8:47 / km)

Woodford-Iona

Quite a few hesitations and got really confused on 9 and 10 (where I mispunched). Other than that had some good legs and even some decent splits which is a little unusual for me. These good splits were generally where I was able to plan ahead or where they were simple legs.

1: Cautious, hesitant, went to wrong control first. -10s
3: hesitant going down hill trying to ensure I was actually going the right way
5: poor route choice. Should have either gone to right of tennis court or directly through (as gates were open at both ends) rather than up and around. Not too expensive though -10s
6: slow and hesitant up rather steep hill. Went around paved area rather than through it, d'oh! -10-20s
9: stuff up. Just didn't see easy route choice around south end of building and around uncrossable fence which, while longer, would have been a very simple, error-free route choice. Just wasn't looking wide enough away from the purple line. Lost at least 30s
10: Was still, I think, a bit confused after 9. Went past 147 - no, not my control. Ran in circles for a bit, ahhh, #147!! Punch and off I go. D'oh, mispunch!
It was a tricky control placement up a narrow alley and even sitting here on the couch I'm still having trouble reading it. Time for new eyes maybe...
11: Still confused and very slow to 11 - went via a rather convoluted out of the way path. Time was ~1 minute down here, wow, didn't realise I was that slow...
12: Left 11 the wrong way up stairs then realised that I really needed to go the other way...

After the cock-ups 8->11 managed to get it together and finish well - ended up being faster than the winner from the road control to finish (although only by 1 second) so if I can keep it together maybe I could be up there in the M50's??

Legs/quads were feeling a little toasted afterwards
